Dayot Upamecano supports Bayern Munich teammate Jonathan Tah following racist abuse

Germany suffered a painful 3-4 penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay after a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes in the World Cup Round of 32. The result left a deep sting, especially for Jonathan Tah, who had looked set to be the hero when his extra-time strike appeared to seal the win—only for the effort to be ruled out after a VAR review. The misfortune then continued in the shootout, where Tah’s spot-kick blazing over the bar proved decisive in Germany’s exit.
As predictable as ever, online racists took the chance to hurl the worst insults at the Bayern Munich defender in the immediate aftermath. Tah has had to endure these vile comments while coming to terms with a humiliating World Cup exit in his first tournament at the global finals.
Fortunately, Tah is not alone in facing this hate. Reporter Kerry Hau spoke with his Bayern teammate Dayot Upamecano, who offered support and praise for his colleague. Upamecano said he had already reached out to Tah after the game, noting that his friend remains remarkably strong. “I’ve been in contact with him. I texted him after the game, and I know he’s very strong,” Upamecano said, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “I’m totally happy to be able to play alongside him—he has a great mentality. He wanted to take that penalty because he’s always had that mentality. He’s very important for Germany and for FC Bayern. I don’t understand why there are still such people—I don’t accept racism. But he shouldn’t concern himself with that. He just has to keep going and give it his all.”
It is vital to have people who truly understand and care around you when such hatred is directed your way. Those friends and teammates are the ones whose opinions matter, not the online trolls whose words reveal their ignorance. One can only hope Tah uses this setback and the racist abuse to fuel a stronger return, continuing to push forward with the same determination and resilience he showed on the field.
