Tigers’ Framber Valdez delivers needed outing against Athletics

Framber Valdez delivered the quality start the Detroit Tigers needed in a Thursday night win over the Oakland Athletics, a performance that helped spark a surge for Detroit. In seven innings at Comerica Park, Valdez allowed only one earned run on three hits and tied a season high with nine strikeouts, guiding the Tigers to a 4-1 victory as Oakland continues to struggle in the series. Prior to Thursday, Detroit had won just 3 of 53 meetings with the perennial Athletics, but Valdez’s effort helped the Tigers complete their first sweep of Oakland since the 2014: June 30-July 2, a testament to the hurler’s steady improvement and the team’s improved form.
Valdez improved to 5-6 on the season with the win. The victory came as Detroit, riding an eight-win-in-nine-games stretch, moved back into playoff contention. Yet in recent appearances, Valdez hadn’t resembled a typical No. 2 starter. Over his previous 12 frames, he carried a 7.36 ERA, a sharp contrast to the rest of Detroit’s rotation, which had posted a combined 0.75 ERA over 60 innings in that span. Entering the week, the Tigers boasted the league’s best team ERA (3.22) and the American League’s best record (20-12), underscoring how crucial Valdez’s return to form could be for their postseason push.
To reign in a prior stretch of struggles, Valdez focused on his sinker’s location. After surrendering nine earned runs on 17 hits across his previous 11 innings, he adjusted by lowering the trajectory of his left elbow below shoulder height, sharpening the pitch’s line and generating 18 swinging strikes. That adjustment paid off with his first win in four starts and a notable uptick in swing-and-miss capability.
Since 2022, Valdez has had success against Oakland, improving to 9-2 in 12 starts versus the Athletics. Detroit’s win reduced the gap in the American League Wild Card standings to 3.5 games as the Tigers prepared to host the Philadelphia Phillies for the final three games before the All-Star break. The Tigers’ contending push hinges on Valdez recapturing the form that made him a two-time All-Star, a return that could be especially important if there’s any shift at the top of the rotation around Tarik Skubal, whose status as a potential trade candidate looms.
As Detroit looks to maintain momentum, Valdez’s latest performance arrives just as the team seeks to leverage its improved starting depth to sustain its bid for a division title or a playoff berth. The Tigers’ upcoming schedule, including a meeting with Philadelphia, provides a platform to continue building a sequence of strong starts that could carry them into the August stretch and beyond. With the All-Star break approaching and trades potentially in play, Valdez’s ability to lock in his mechanics and consistently command the strike zone will be central to Detroit’s chances of maintaining and increasing their standing in the league’s competitive landscape.
