Engelhard knocks in four, Canaries claim series

Rosemont, IL – Chase Engelhard drove in four runs Thursday and slugged his first Canaries home run as the Sioux Falls Canaries defeated the Chicago Dogs 8-3 at Impact Field. The Dogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to three Sioux Falls errors, but the Canaries answered back with a pair of homers in the fifth that put them on top for good.
The scoring sequence began when TJ Racherbaumer drew a one-out walk, setting the table for Engelhard to launch a two-run homer. Later that same inning, Mike Hart reached on a single, and Josh Rehwaldt followed with a two-run shot, marking his third long ball in as many games. Chicago did manage to plate a run in the bottom of the sixth, but they left the bases loaded, preventing a bigger inning. The Canaries stretched their advantage in the top of the eighth, tacking on four runs to break the game open. Anthony Sharkas delivered an RBI fielder’s choice, and a dropped third strike allowed Michael Curialle to score. Engelhard added two more RBIs with a bases-loaded single, extending the lead before the Dogs could finally escape the inning.
Chicago added a run of their own with a two-out single in the top of the ninth, but it proved too little, too late as the Birds secured their third straight series win for the first time this season. Engelhard and Rehwaldt each finished with two hits, and Thomas Dorminy carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before earning the win, allowing one earned run on three hits over 5 2/3 innings pitched. The Canaries improved to 26-23 on the season as they head into the All-Star break, closing the first half with a four-game set in Kansas City, beginning with a doubleheader Friday at 5:05 p.m.
