Torrey Pines’ Jason Jutronich weighs options ahead of MLB draft

By admin — In News — July 10, 2026

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Jason Jutronich has long carried the pressure of chasing a Division I championship with Torrey Pines, but four minutes in the interview chair was a breeze for the Falcons’ left-hander. This isn’t the first time Jutronich has faced a camera from KUSI; you’d have to rewind seven years to 2019 when he was playing for Solana Beach Little League to see the early moments of his growing profile.
“I remember this year exactly,” Jutronich recalled, watching a surprise replay. “That was one of the greatest times of my life… looking back on it now, I miss a lot of those guys.”
Today, though, the focus is squarely on the present and the immediate future as the MLB Draft looms this weekend. Jutronich finds himself weighing two compelling paths, each loaded with potential rewards. If he’s selected in one of the 20 rounds, he could sign with a major league organization and begin his minor league journey at 18. On the other hand, he has a scholarship offer to the University of California, Santa Barbara, tucked into his back pocket. Both routes come with financial considerations: direct signing bonuses from a major league club versus the benefits of NIL opportunities that could accompany a college route.
“It just depends on what I want to do and what my family thinks is best for me,” Jutronich said. “There are two great options in front of me, and I’m excited for both. College would let me earn a degree, mature, and grow, and maybe come out of there as a first-rounder.” He added, “Going straight to the draft aligns with what I’ve dreamed about since I was four or five years old. It’s the chance to compete at the highest level of baseball and get paid to do it.”
In high school pitch terms, Jutronich’s résumé is impressive. He struck out 87 batters across his career with Torrey Pines, posting a 2.47 ERA. His performance has positioned him as one of the top 400 prospects in this year’s MLB Draft.
The 2026 draft class features a number of notable prospects beyond Jutronich, including AJ Curry from University City with a Tennessee commitment,Max Bayles of Cathedral who has Santa Clara on his radar, Steele Murdock from UCSD, Rohan Lettow of SDSU, Kevin Takeuchi from La Jolla who has USC in mind, Isaiah Lane of Eastlake with Hope International/USDa, Maddox Haley from Madison who’s connected to SWC and Gonzaga, Andrew Gauna of Heny who is bound for CSUN/USDA, and Alex Fernandes from San Marcos who will be heading to SJSU. Jutronich is listed among these players as a Torrey Pines standout with UCSD as a college path option.
