Most Overlooked Jets Draft Pick Projected to Be Full Time Starter

The New York Jets entered April’s draft with three first-round selections, and among the trio, the most overlooked figure might be former Indiana wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. Despite current modest hype, one analyst believes he has already begun to leave a mark. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox noted that Cooper was the last of the Jets’ three first-round picks, yet he could be the first to secure a full-time starting role. The Indiana product proved to be a dependable target for quarterback Fernando Mendoza last season, compiling 937 receiving yards and an impressive 13 touchdowns. Knox pointed out that the Jets are in need of another reliable pass catcher to pair with Garrett Wilson, and that while Adonai Mitchell has flashed since arriving in the Sauce Gardner trade, Cooper has the potential to emerge as New York’s No. 2 option as early as this season. At minimum, Cooper should rank among the Jets’ top three receivers by the end of training camp, if not already cemented there. He has shown inside-outside versatility, but last season he logged 88.3 percent of his snaps from the slot, per Mitch Sherman and Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, so expect him to begin his Jets career in a similar role.
During an appearance on “Boy Green Daily,” Jets reporter Nick Faria of SI discussed the team’s receiver situation and confirmed that the top three wide receivers have taken shape, with Cooper projected to be a starter in the initial three-wide receiver set for Week 1. ESPN’s Rich Cimini has likewise been impressed with Cooper during spring workouts ahead of training camp. Cooper’s real strength lies in his ability to make plays once the ball is in his hands and to absorb contact, a quality that could become more evident once pads come on. OTAs and mandatory minicamp are non-contact environments, so positive impressions there are encouraging signs of what could be ahead once full pads are worn in training camp.
If Cooper is turning heads before the Jets even don pads, that bodes well for his future impact. Although the Jets may still be searching for a long-term quarterback, the early returns on their offensive approach have drawn substantial praise for creating a favorable environment for productive playmakers. In the same draft class, the Jets added Kenyon Sadiq, a standout Oregon tight end, with the No. 16 overall pick. Knox described Sadiq as an exceptionally talented pass-catcher who stood out as the top tight end on Bleacher Report’s Scouting Department’s final board by a wide margin. Sadiq’s health kept him out of the last week of OTAs and all of mandatory minicamp due to hernia surgery, but he’s expected to be ready for training camp.
Alongside Cooper, another notable addition for the Jets is David Bailey, who became part of a historic moment for the franchise as the highest-drafted defensive player in Jets history. As the team continues to build its roster, Cooper’s potential impact remains a central storyline, with optimism that he could develop into a dependable, multi-faceted weapon for an offense that has received considerable praise for its arranging of skilled playmakers. With training camp approaching, observers remain eager to see how Cooper, Sadiq, and the rest of the young group translate their promising spring performances into regular-season production.
