Real Madrid have completed the signing of defender Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £51.8 million, with the Spanish international agreeing to a six-year contract.
The transfer fee includes an initial payment of £47.5 million, with an additional £4.3 million tied to performance-related bonuses. Although the agreement was finalized on Sunday, the official announcement was made on Monday while Cucurella remains on international duty with Spain at the FIFA World Cup in North America.
The 27-year-old left-back joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022 for £63 million and has now secured a return to his homeland. A graduate of Barcelona’s renowned youth academy, Cucurella had previously been linked with moves to both Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.
Real Madrid continue to be active in the transfer market under president Florentino Perez and manager Jose Mourinho. The club is reportedly pursuing Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva and Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries, while Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate is expected to arrive after his departure from Anfield.
During the March international break, Cucurella publicly expressed concerns about Chelsea’s leadership following the departure of Enzo Maresca midway through the season. Reports suggested that several Spanish-speaking members of the squad shared similar frustrations and struggled to adapt under Maresca’s replacement, Liam Rosenior.
With three years remaining on his Chelsea contract, Cucurella’s improved terms last season did not include an extension, a factor that may have influenced Chelsea’s willingness to negotiate his sale.
Chelsea endured a difficult campaign, finishing 10th in the league and missing out on European qualification. Rosenior was dismissed before the end of the season, while Calum McFarlane briefly took charge as caretaker manager.
Meanwhile, former Real Madrid midfielder and Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has been appointed as the club’s permanent manager for the 2026-27 season.
