Laverty wants Down to cap whirlwind year with All-Ireland ticket

Conor Laverty is hoping Down can finish a tumultuous season on a high note by claiming silverware as they prepare to meet Wicklow in Saturday’s Tailteann Cup final at 15:30 BST. The Mourne County burst onto the championship scene with a stunning upset of Donegal in the Ulster quarter-finals, only to be dealt a brutal 28-point defeat by Armagh in the semi-finals, turning early triumph into later heartbreak. After narrowly missing out on a spot in the All-Ireland series, Down have nevertheless navigated their way to a third Tailteann Cup decider in four seasons.
“The main prize with the Tailteann is the ticket into Sam Maguire football next year, and that’s something this team would love to secure,” said Laverty, who guided Down to Tailteann Cup glory in 2024. “After the Donegal result, we swung from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, but that’s the nature of this competition and the rules that were laid out at the start of the year. As a group, we set ourselves standards, and it’ll be no different on Saturday afternoon.”
While Down stunned Donegal, Wicklow—led by Oisin McConville—came close to delivering a similarly seismic scalp by pushing Dublin in the Leinster quarter-finals. The Garden County nonetheless navigated dramatic knockout battles against Antrim and Offaly to reach their first Tailteann Cup final, and Laverty remains wary of the challenge they pose.
“We’ve watched Wicklow closely over the past number of weeks. Their performance against Dublin in the Leinster Championship showed they probably should have won that game, so we’re aware of the quality they bring,” he said. “Some of their players are among the best, so we understand it’s going to be a tough contest. We have to be prepared to deliver a full 70-minute performance.”
Laverty’s emphasis on consistency underscores Down’s approach as they aim to convert momentum into tangible silverware. The final promises a high-stakes duel, with Down determined to capitalize on their Tailteann Cup pedigree and Wicklow seeking to etch their name in the competition’s history. As both sides prepare for a showdown that could shape their trajectory ahead of the next season, Laverty’s message to his squad remains clear: stay disciplined, stay focused, and execute the game plan from opening whistle to final whistle.
