Borussia Dortmund’s Kjell Wätjen nearing Midtjylland move

Following Cole Campbell and Julien Duranville, Kjell Wätjen could be the next Borussia Dortmund player to depart this summer. A report from Ruhr Nachrichten suggests the 20-year-old midfielder is close to joining Danish side Midtjylland. The move would see Wätjen reunite with former BVB U19 head coach Mike Tullberg, who coached the German 44 times across all competitions.
Nevertheless, even with Wätjen’s near exit, RN notes that a final agreement has not yet been struck. However, a deal reportedly worth around €4 million is expected to be completed soon. While there is no official timetable for the transfer, Borussia Dortmund seems to be wrapping up its transfer activity early, aiming to finalize business before players return from their summer break on July 14.
For Wätjen, the potential move marks the end of his long association with Dortmund, a club he joined as a youth player in 2015. He has made only four senior appearances for the first team. Last season, on loan at 2. Bundesliga club Bochum, he contributed three goals or assists in 29 appearances across the campaign.
This development comes amid Dortmund’s broader efforts to recalibrate their squad ahead of the new season, with several young players like Wätjen expected to explore opportunities elsewhere if a swift agreement with Midtjylland can be reached. The transfer would also reflect Dortmund’s ongoing strategy of balancing youth development with practical loan and sale options to optimize first-team pathways and financial stability.
