Report – Why Barcelona are no longer rushing to sell €30 million-rated homegrown midfielder

Marc Casado’s position at FC Barcelona has shifted dramatically in a very short period. Up until the end of June, the La Masia graduate was seen as one of the club’s most valuable assets for generating immediate income, with the expectation that a sale could deliver a quick financial boost. But after the club’s fiscal year closed, the scenario changed considerably, according to SPORT.
For weeks, Barcelona’s primary goal was to balance the books by June 30. To that end, the sporting department examined several potential sales that could yield capital gains, and Casado stood out as one of the most attractive options. Because he came through Barcelona’s academy, nearly the entire transfer fee would have counted as accounting profit, making him one of the club’s most efficient assets for improving financial results. There was no urgent need to sell Casado, and the club could afford to be selective.
Now that the financial year has officially closed, Barcelona is no longer under pressure to push through an urgent sale. Although the club ended the year with a slight loss—pending official confirmation at the upcoming members’ assembly—the board opted not to rush into a transfer that could undermine the sporting project purely for accounting reasons. This change has markedly altered Barcelona’s stance on the midfielder.
Casado remains a player who attracts interest in the market, and a departure remains a realistic possibility if the right proposal arrives. However, the club no longer feels compelled to accept offers below its valuation. Barcelona currently believes that a transfer around €30 million would be ideal from both sporting and financial perspectives. A deal of that size would generate significant capital gains while strengthening the club’s financial position without forcing a low-price sale, aligning sporting ambitions with economic prudence.
The new situation also eliminates the possibility of using Casado in an exchange deal. For weeks, there had been speculation that he could be included in negotiations to facilitate the signing of Joao Cancelo, but that option is no longer on the table.
If Casado does leave Barcelona, it will be through a straightforward transfer that provides a direct financial return for the club. As things stand today, there is no longer any urgency to sell the homegrown midfielder.
Despite ongoing speculation about his future, Casado’s stance remains clear. In a recent interview, the midfielder underscored his commitment, stating: “I have always said it. As long as the coach and the club want it that way, I will always want to defend this badge to the death.” With Barcelona’s financial pressures easing, the emphasis now sits on aligning strategic sporting choices with sustainable fiscal health, and Casado’s future will depend on how the club’s leadership weighs sporting needs against financial considerations.
