Why Hull’s £55m loan is a ‘little strange’

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire says Hull City’s decision to take out a £55 million loan from a third-party investment group leaves you scratching your head a little. A notice filed at Companies House confirms the club has borrowed from Point72, a global investment firm. The loan is secured against Hull’s training ground and the lease for the stadium.
It remains unclear why the club would pursue this arrangement, especially as they are poised to receive the first tranche of Premier League money, thought to be around £30 million, in the near future. “It does seem very strange,” Maguire told BBC Radio Humberside. “If you look at Point72 — this is a company that was only set up in January, so it isn’t a traditional bank, and you do wonder where it came from. The ‘72’ may refer to the number of EFL clubs, suggesting it could be a specialist lender.”
Ideally, Maguire suggests, the loan should be a bridging facility. Hull is expected to receive its first Premier League payment within the next week or so, which should inject cash back into the business. “It has been quite expensive since that glorious day at Wembley,” he notes, pointing to the costs of bonuses and stadium upgrades needed to meet Premier League expectations. There were also mandatory VAR camera installations, which add to the expense of promotion.
The most perplexing aspect, he adds, is the possibility that this is merely a short-term bridging loan to cover cash flow until Premier League money starts flowing. “If the owner is independently wealthy, why not inject that money for a couple of months and then withdraw it again?” He emphasizes that borrowing from a third party is the part that leaves you scratching your head.
