This UConn women’s upperclassman made her summer a stay-cation, and it’s paying dividends

STORRS — In an era when commitments don’t always endure, UConn’s Allie Ziebell doubled down on hers. “My priority is basketball right now, this is what I’m going to pour into and what I’m committed to,” Ziebell said. “Having the commitment level to this team and this program is a statement, a testament to what everyone does here.”
Ziebell, entering her junior year with the Huskies, spent the summer turning those words into action. She stayed on campus to get stronger, improve her conditioning, and sharpen her game. Arriving from Neenah, Wisconsin with a reputation as an elite shooter, she is determined to become more than that before her time in the program ends. “It’s just knowing what we need, what the team needs,” Ziebell said. “I need to step up now, and I think I know how to do that and what to do. I just need to get my body ready to do that.”
Her path at UConn has been a process, as it is for many in the program. Despite being a five-star recruit, she shared the floor with Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd, and Sarah Strong, among others, and often found herself deferring. A lengthy conversation with coach Geno Auriemma midway through last season—who reminded her she didn’t have to defer—helped build her confidence and readiness to assert her own skills.
The breakthrough came against Xavier on Jan. 28, when Ziebell unleashed 14 shots from behind the 3-point line, sinking 10 as Gampel Pavilion erupted with every make. She finished with 34 points, then added 10 points in 16 minutes against a tougher Tennessee squad a few days later, reinforcing her role in the offense. By season’s end, with two, possibly three years of eligibility remaining, she decided to stay on campus all summer to make her mark in Storrs. She went home for six days and may return to Wisconsin briefly, but she has remained on campus, training, and refining her craft with the coaches and practice players.
“I knew toward the end of the year I was going to stay here for a set period,” she said. “I just didn’t know how much. This is probably the best decision for me. Being around here longer helps body-wise, mentally, physically—everything. I feel a lot more confident. I’ve already talked to the coach about what I need to do; it’s very clear. A lot of confidence comes from that, when you’re in the weight room and going through conditioning tests. So knowing you have that and don’t have to worry about it, just growing on that.”
While most players wrapped up the summer session and returned home, Ziebell kept her routine going at the Werth Center, arriving at 9 a.m. for weight training and conditioning, working with the sports performance staff to build a stronger foundation for the coming season. This persistent commitment is a reflection of her broader goal: to contribute more comprehensively to the Huskies’ success and to prove that her growth can be as impactful as her shooting touch.
