Rory McIlroy is teeing off at the Scottish Open as part of his preparation for the year’s final major, aiming to sharpen his links game before heading to Royal Birkdale. The Career Grand Slam champion has already added a major title to his resume this season, capturing his second consecutive Masters at Augusta National. He remained in the thick of it at the PGA Championship, but couldn’t summon a late push, and at the US Open he found himself off his usual rhythm and not in contention.
McIlroy’s first round in Scotland offered encouraging signs as he tackles an area of his game that has lingered this year. While his driving accuracy has sometimes left him out of favorable positions and may have cost him a chance at Aronimink, the opening round in Scotland indicates he’s found more precision with his driver. The Renaissance Club’s fairways are among the most challenging on the PGA Tour, yet McIlroy managed to gain more than two strokes off the tee on Thursday. After 18 holes, he sat atop the Scottish Open leaderboard with a five-under 65. When he’s driving it straight and long, the Northern Irish star becomes a formidable force, and there’s little a player can do to slow him down.
If McIlroy can maintain this level throughout the week, it will bode very well for his chances at The Open at Royal Birkdale. He has not been entirely comfortable with his driver all year, but he noted that he began rediscovering his swing off the tee at Shinnecock Hills during the US Open build-up, with a steady improvement since then. This week marks his first competitive action since the US Open, so he’s beginning to realize that improved feel on the course.
After his opening round, McIlroy said, “Yeah, I thought, for the most part, I played well. I felt like I drove the ball particularly well, and I started to see that at Shinnecock, a couple weeks ago. A continuation of putting the ball in play, and then once I do that, I feel like I can attack courses and I can set up scoring opportunities. I did that today. I played the par 5s well. I hit all three greens in regulation. One putt dropped for eagle and two 2-putt birdies. That always helps the card. Overall, good to get my first round of competitive golf on a links course, and it’s obviously a great start to the tournament.”
Should McIlroy sustain this form, it will be very difficult for any opponent to outpace him over the four rounds. His ability to find fairways and set up birdie opportunities again underscores why he remains one of the top contenders in major championships and why his fans remain hopeful as he chases the career Grand Slam. With his latest solid outing in Scotland, the road to a potential Open triumph at Royal Birkdale looks increasingly navigable for the world No. 2, provided he keeps striking the ball with precision and continues converting opportunities on the tougher links layouts.
