The first stage of the women’s Tour of Britain will highlight parts of Cumbria that a council leader describes as amazing. Stage One will start and finish in Cockermouth, covering 98.7 miles (158.9 kilometers) of Cumbrian scenery and featuring nearly 6,300 feet (about 1.9 kilometers) of elevation gain. This opening stage, the first of five, is scheduled to begin on August 19 and will route cyclists through Frizington, Whitehaven, Lowca, Workington, Flimby, Maryport, Allonby, Silloth, Wigton, Caldbeck, and Aspatria.
Cumberland Council leader Mark Fryer expressed his delight with the route, noting that it provides expansive views of the Irish Sea and could bring crosswinds on some exposed sections as described by the race organizers. The finish line will be marked by a 16.1-mile (26-kilometer) circuit around Clints Crags, passing Watch Hill and Ruddings Hill. Fryer commented, “We are delighted the route takes in so much of our west coast and will showcase our amazing towns and landscape.”
The event continues to be a showcase for Cumbria, which is also set to host a start and finish for next year’s men’s Tour de France, an announcement Fryer called great news and proof that the area is a prime location for international events. Stage One again starts and ends in Cockermouth and will pass through several West Cumbrian towns, including Maryport.
The 2026 Lloyds Tour of Britain Women marks the longest edition in the event’s history, spanning about 395 miles (635.8 kilometers). Stage Two will run from Clitheroe to Blackpool, Stage Three from Mold to The Great Orme in Llandudno, Stage Four from Llanidloes to Hay-on-Wye, and Stage Five will take place at Royal Leamington Spa. Jonathan Day, director of events for British Cycling Ventures, stated that the route demonstrates the ambition to bring elite women’s cycling to diverse communities across Britain. He explained that the course has been designed to offer opportunities for a range of rider types and to challenge for the title, ensuring that every stage could influence the overall outcome.
For followers of the event, BBC Cumbria invites audiences to stay connected on X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and Instagram. The route for the 2026 Tour of Britain Women has been announced, and the tour is being portrayed as a once-in-a-lifetime thrill. Cumberland Council’s involvement is also linked to improved SEO and regional pride as part of the broader promotion surrounding the event.
