Decades before football became Nikefied, when teams wore more different uniforms than games in a season, it was rare—and notable—when a squad turned up to play in a look that wasn’t their standard. Notre Dame, in particular, embodied that rare moment, almost never unveiling green jerseys at the right, dramatic times. The occasion that etched this practice into legend arrived on October 29, 1977. In South Bend, with No. 5 USC standing in the way, the Irish rolled a Trojan horse onto the field and then emerged from the tunnel donning green jerseys for the first time. Led by quarterback Joe Montana, Notre Dame dissected the Men of Troy in a spectacular 49-19 triumph.
Today, most college teams rotate a variety of uniforms often enough that the ritual of donning a special look has lost its surprise. Yet Notre Dame has a distinctive wrinkle planned for Week 1: a game against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field that will mark the program’s first visit to that storied venue. Via ESPN’s J.J. Post, the special kit for the Wisconsin game pays homage to the Green Bay Packers. The blue hue mirrors the shade worn by the 1920s Acme Packers, while the sleeves feature Packers-style stripes. The uniform introduction video draws a thread between the Packers and the Irish, noting that Curly Lambeau once played for Knute Rockne and that Paul Hornung starred for both Notre Dame and Green Bay.
“We are the outliers,” the video proclaims, with coach Marcus Freeman adding, “The small-town legends. The independent spirits who believe tradition isn’t something you just remember. It’s something you wear.” The jersey’s collar bears eleven shamrocks, a nod to Notre Dame’s eleven consensus national championships: 1924, 1929, 1930, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1966, 1973, 1977, and 1988.
The Fighting Irish currently endure the longest title drought in their history, with their last national championship triumph dating back to a victory over West Virginia and Major Harris—38 years ago. For those who grew up with the sight of “Country Roads” as a soundtrack to victory, the nostalgia runs deep, especially for fans who still feel that old sting of a long wait for another championship banner to rise.
On September 6, in one of just two college football games scheduled for Labor Day Weekend Sunday, Notre Dame will stride into Wisconsin and effectively convert Green Bay into their temporary fortress for a day. Their mission is clear: topple the home team that proudly calls Wisconsin its base of operation. It’s a challenge they relish, even if the matchup history already favors the Irish in the eyes of many pundits.
Notre Dame doesn’t need the extra edge that the Green Machine aesthetic provides—though it helps. The Irish come into the season as 20.5-point favorites against the Badgers, and they remain among the front-runners in early-season discussions about who might claim a 12th national shamrock and lift the collar’s emblem to new glory. In a sport that often rewards showmanship as much as execution, this greened-up throwback serves as a reminder of the program’s enduring identity: a blend of storied tradition and bold, memorable moments that turn heads and stir the imagination of fans old and new alike.
