Even as the World Cup lingers in the memory, Scottish football supporters are already turning their attention back to domestic matters. Scotland’s early exit has narrowed the focus to league and cup action, and there are competitive fixtures to anticipate as soon as Saturday. The first-round group stages of the Premier Sports Cup kick off this weekend, featuring four Scottish Premiership sides, and there are several matchups to watch in Group C, D, B, and G.
Last season proved to be a rollercoaster for title holders St Mirren. The Paisley club lifted the trophy in December by beating Celtic 3-1 at Hampden, but managerial changes followed when Stephen Robinson left for Aberdeen in March. Interim boss Craig McLeish took charge for the Buddies’ remaining 2025-26 fixtures. A Scottish Cup semi-final rematch with Celtic saw St Mirren claw back from two goals down to force extra time, only for Celtic to pull away and win 6-2. The campaign then shifted toward Premier League survival, a battle that stretched into the play-off final. McLeish secured a 2-1 aggregate win over Partick Thistle, earning the job on a permanent basis, and he has appointed Marcus Fraser as the new captain after Mark O’Hara’s departure. St Mirren begin their League Cup defence with an away fixture at Dumbarton (kick-off 15:00 BST), while East Kilbride host Scottish Cup finalists Dunfermline Athletic in the other Group C match. Cove Rangers have no fixture this round.
Chris Mochrie, who now plays for St Mirren, scored Airdrieonians’ winner at Dens Park last July. Dundee, who failed to make it out of the group stage last season, saw Airdrieonians’ 1-0 victory at Dens Park contribute to their exit. Steven Pressley’s side enjoyed a solid Premiership campaign and avoided relegation concerns, and on Saturday they return to Dens Park, almost exactly a year after their last visit, hoping to pull off another upset when they meet Airdrieonians at 15:00. In Group D, Annan Athletic host Ross County—a long trip for the visitors—while Clyde take a weekend off. The evening programme features Dundee United’s away trip to Stirling Albion (17:30) in Group B, following Arbroath’s midday clash with Spartans. Last season, United entered Europe as Scotland’s representative but were given a bye in the first round and exited in the second round to Kilmarnock. Jim Goodwin’s side finished seventh in the Premiership.
Falkirk were one of the standout teams last season, and their progress has continued to draw attention. John McGlynn’s side finished sixth in the Premiership after consecutive promotions, and in the league stage they went through their group undefeated. However, a second-round clash with Celtic ended in a 4-1 defeat in Glasgow. In Group G, Stranraer host Ayr United, while Alloa Athletic are not part of this round for SEO purposes. The weekend’s fixtures promise excitement across the country as teams aim to make a strong early statement in the Premier Sports Cup, setting the tone for the rest of the season.
