On a hot, sunny afternoon, soccer fans from across the globe gathered in Foxborough, Massachusetts, to witness the World Cup quarterfinal clash between France and Morocco on Thursday, July 9. Both teams boasted superlative talent, but the crowd largely came to see Kylian Mbappé, widely regarded as the heir to Lionel Messi. France entered as the favorites, yet Morocco, still seeking redemption after a 2-0 defeat to France in the 2022 quarterfinals, looked to flip the script. The Moroccan squad even includes six players of French descent with dual citizenship, turning this matchup into something of a semi-derby.
The early stages saw both sides test the other, probing for openings during a tense first 20 minutes. Mbappé soon asserted his prowess. He charged down the left flank toward the Moroccan goal and was fouled by defender Noussair Mazraoui, yielding a penalty. It took Mbappé about four minutes to set himself, place the ball, and strike to the right—only to watch Morocco’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou pull off a sensational save. The save was a surprising moment that injected new life into the Moroccans and sparked doubts about Mbappé’s fate from the spot. As the teams reached halftime level at 0-0, the scoreline suggested the match remained up for grabs, even with Mbappé’s earlier miss looming large in the minds of France supporters.
The second half unfolded with similar momentum, possession evenly shared and France nudging ahead slightly. Then, in the 60th minute, the game shifted decisively in an instant. Mbappé, who had endured a moment of misfortune 40 minutes earlier, elevated his status to reach Messi-like heights. He stood with the ball just outside and to the left of the penalty area, about 20 yards out, with a defender pressed in front of him. Without hesitation, Mbappé stepped to his right and curled a strike that bent around the defender and into the far top corner. The crowd erupted in a wave of astonishment at what they had just witnessed. It was Mbappé’s eighth goal of the tournament and a defining moment on the sport’s biggest stage, leaving the Moroccans stunned and the rest of the stadium erupting in disbelief. For many, that goal signaled the end of the contest.
Six minutes later, Ousmane Dembélé added another French goal, his fifth of the World Cup, effectively sealing the result. There would be chances on both sides over the remaining 30 minutes, but France maintained control and secured a clean sheet. Mbappé’s night was further marred when he was fouled by Morocco’s Isso Diop, suffering an ankle injury in the 77th minute. He was substituted soon after, a change that underscored France’s dependence on their fleet-footed forward. The result sent France through to the next stage and left Morocco to regroup from a match that had seen moments of brilliance from both sides but ultimately swung in France’s favor.
