Brewers to sign ex-Phillies, Pirates, Cubs righty pitcher with 4.86 ERA

The Milwaukee Brewers sit at the top of the NL Central and appear well-positioned to claim the division as the season unfolds. Yet, there remains room for improvement between now and the MLB trade deadline. Beyond needs on the infield and in the bullpen, adding another starting pitcher has consistently ranked high on the Brewers’ shopping list this season. While they have yet to make a blockbuster move, they recently added a free-agent pitcher who could contribute this year.
According to Robert Murray of Fansided, the Brewers are closing in on a deal to sign right-hander Bryse Wilson, who has spent time with the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs earlier this season. “Free-agent pitcher Bryse Wilson and the Milwaukee Brewers are in agreement on a contract, according to sources familiar with the deal,” Murray reports. The Brewers are looking for added pitching depth, and Wilson brings a veteran presence to the mound, even if his numbers this season have been uneven.
This year, Wilson has logged 9.2 innings across three appearances, posting a 6.52 ERA and eight strikeouts. His performance with the Cubs over two outings in 7.2 innings yielded an 8.22 ERA, while his stint with the Phillies saw him work 2.0 innings with a 0.00 ERA. Across his big-league career, Wilson has posted a 20-23 record in 166 games, with a 4.86 ERA, 341 strikeouts, and a 1.41 WHIP over 470.2 innings pitched.
Wilson previously wore Brewers colors in 2023 and 2024, delivering solid results with a 2.58 ERA over 76.2 innings and a 4.04 ERA over 104 innings, respectively. His career path has also included time with the Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates, and in 2025 he appeared for the Chicago White Sox, recording a 6.65 ERA. In the minor leagues this season, all in the Phillies’ Triple-A system, he posted a 6.29 ERA across 12 games (11 starts) spanning 54.1 innings.
This move comes as the Cubs designated Wilson for assignment on July 4, and the Brewers are stepping in to bolster their pitching depth ahead of the All-Star break and the looming trade deadline. The acquisition could provide valuable depth in the rotation or out of the bullpen as Milwaukee looks to maintain its edge in the division and evaluate options for potential upgrades as the summer progresses. The Brewers remain one of several teams connected to starting pitcher upgrades, and Wilson’s addition could play a role in their broader late-season plans.
