Owner Arte Moreno was not involved in the decision-making process. Mozeliak, 57, becomes the sixth general manager to work under Moreno. He arrives in Anaheim with a wealth of experience, most notably serving as the Cardinals’ general manager for 18 seasons. During his tenure in St. Louis, he helped guide the team to 15 consecutive winning seasons from 2008 through 2022 and oversaw the club’s 2011 World Series championship.
In her first year as president, Jolly indicated that leadership changes were warranted and that “change always starts with that first decision.” Mozeliak’s arrival brings not only extensive experience but also a fresh perspective at a critical juncture for the organization, as the team heads toward the draft and the trade deadline. In the near term, Mozeliak’s priorities are to ready the squad for the upcoming draft and to navigate the deadline when the club can make meaningful moves to reshape its roster.
The length of Mozeliak’s tenure with the Angels beyond this season remains uncertain, but his stated aim is to restore a winning culture within the organization and to set Anaheim on a clearer path toward sustained success. “Over the next couple of months, I’m going to devote a lot of energy to understanding what’s happening beneath the surface and then work our way up,” Mozeliak explained. He also emphasized that, when it comes to the draft, he intends to take a more hands-off approach and will rely heavily on scouting director Tim McIlvaine to guide recommendations and evaluate talent.
While Mozeliak has not fully ruled out remaining as GM beyond the current season, he has indicated a preference for a short-term leadership role with an eye toward appointing a permanent general manager after the trade deadline passes. In the meantime, the Angels are planning to keep Kurt Suzuki at the helm as manager, along with the rest of the staff and front office, though Mozeliak will reassess those personnel as the season draws to a close. Through 94 games this season, Anaheim sits at 37-57, with 68 games remaining, illustrating the urgency for decisive leadership and targeted changes.
Before Mozeliak’s hiring, there were rumors linking the Angels to Albert Pujols through a possible deal involving Kurt Suzuki, but the negotiations did not come to fruition. Mozeliak’s prior connection to Pujols from their overlapping years with the Cardinals could revive that discussion should opportunities arise in the future. For now, the plan remains to evaluate and reinforce the current management structure while Mozeliak undertakes a comprehensive review of the organization’s operations, scouting, and development programs.
Change is necessary, and the coming weeks will reveal whether Mozeliak’s approach can catalyze a turnaround for a team that sorely needs it.
