Roman Anthony injury: Craig Breslow provides update after Red Sox outfielder sees hand specialist

Roman Anthony remains on the right track after seeking a second opinion from Dr. Gary Lourie regarding his lingering finger injury. During a recent appearance on WEEI, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow shared that Anthony had his appointment and that Dr. Lourie confirmed the treatment plan the outfielder has been following. “Unfortunately, this is just an injury that’s taking longer than expected to heal,” Breslow said. “But by all accounts, it sounds like we’re on the right track.”
Anthony has been out of action since May, when he tore a ligament at the base of his right ring finger during an at-bat against the Detroit Tigers. Initially, team officials believed he would avoid the injured list, but the 22-year-old now finds himself on the 60-day injured list as he continues his rehabilitation. On Friday, BetMGM listed the Red Sox moneyline at +115 for their interleague matchup against the Mets. A full BetMGM Sportsbook review could help fans navigate how to use the app for such bets.
With a crowded clubhouse and a steady stream of injured players, the Red Sox sent Anthony to Fort Myers to push forward with his rehab. Breslow explained that the team must balance what is best for Roman with what is best for the rest of the 26 players trying to be ready for game action. “And unfortunately, the number of players on the IL has grown, but the size of the training room at Fenway Park has not. So we made the decision that, first, it made sense for Roman to see another hand specialist in Atlanta, and then, from there, to continue with rehab in Fort Myers, where we have all of the resources and everything that we need,” he said.
Progress has been gradual, reflecting the ongoing pain Anthony experiences. In a candid moment on the Baseball Isn’t Boring podcast, he acknowledged that the slow pace of recovery has been disappointing, yet he also emphasized what he’s learned through the process. There is no set timeline for his return. “Being a competitor, being a baseball player my entire life, it’s all I know,” Anthony told WEEI’s Rob Bradford. “Just the most simple thing is that I’m not out there. And so sitting here, watching games, I’m not meant to watch games. And that’s the way I look at it. I want to be out there. I want to be helping the boys. I want to be part of it. I want to play baseball. I’m over sitting here and waiting on a finger. It sounds ridiculous to me.”
As Anthony continues to rehabilitate, the organization remains hopeful that his path to full strength is progressing, even if the timetable remains uncertain. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely for any signs of improved function and a renewed push toward game readiness. In the meantime, the Red Sox will rely on the depth of their organization and the expertise of their medical staff as they navigate roster decisions and the challenges of managing a growing list of injured players. The situation remains dynamic, with Anthony’s status closely tied to the next steps recommended by his medical team.
