‘Brilliant’ or ‘disappointing’? – your thoughts on Edwards’ departure

By admin — In News — July 10, 2026

We asked for your views on Michael Edwards’ time at Anfield, which spanned over 15 years across two separate stints. Here are some of your comments.
Gareth: Since he came on board, he has wasted money trying to turn Liverpool into a group of Galacticos—overspending on players who didn’t fit the system. He also failed to align his decisions with the club’s broader expectations after Fenway’s decision not to buy a second club, an issue that stains his reputation. In summary, his first tenure ended as a success, while the second left him with a reputation for failure.
Andy: What can you say? We did brilliantly during Edwards’ time at the club. There were many positives along the way, and a few tricky moments, but who is ever perfect in that respect? He can leave with a very proud sense of achievement and with the supporters’ genuine thanks.
James: A disappointing and underwhelming second spell.
Dan: There has been a noticeable shift at the club now that he’s gone—no doubt he helped drive the success the club has enjoyed since FSG took over. In recent years, it has sometimes felt like there’s less focus on what made Liverpool so savvy in earlier times, perhaps because Edwards’ role involved developing a multi-club model. It’s reassuring to see that model appear to be moving on and being ditched, if that’s the case.
Fraser: Honestly, I don’t know why he was brought back in the first place. He wasn’t needed as CEO of football. My concern lies more with Richard Hughes and the sporting director role. We need someone who can provide long-term stability behind the scenes and secure full backing for Iraola.
Fran: To be fair, his return seemed aimed at chasing bigger objectives, but the results didn’t meet those ambitions. The recruitment pattern of 25-26 feels uneven at best, and I hope that isn’t what he’s most remembered for.
