A former first-round pick could be on his way to the Houston Texans if his legal situation is cleared. The Detroit Free Press reports that Terrion Arnold, the former first-round selection and longtime Detroit Lions starting cornerback, underwent a physical in Houston with the Texans on Thursday. In a conversation with Detroit Free Press columnist Dave Birkett, Arnold’s agent, Nicole Lynn, indicated that several teams, including Houston, have discussed the possibility of adding the recently released cornerback in free agency ahead of training camp. Lynn also noted that the Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, and Seattle Seahawks have inquired about Arnold’s status as well.
When asked about his status for the upcoming 2026 NFL season, Lynn said there is a “very good likelihood” Arnold will be signed within the next 45 days. Arnold, a former Alabama standout selected in the first round, was released late in the month after being arrested on felony charges of kidnapping, armed robbery, and conspiracy. He posted a $1 million bond last month and remains subject to travel restrictions while he undergoes further legal proceedings. The charges against him carry the potential for a life sentence, and under the terms of his bail, the third-year cornerback is permitted to leave his home only for legal or work-related activities, including NFL workouts. There is, as of now, no ruling preventing him from signing with another team if a deal is reached. The Texans were among the clubs that met with Arnold in person at the NFL Scouting Combine in 2024.
Houston has a precedent for giving players second chances, and tying the team to Arnold isn’t implausible. He remains a young cornerback with upside, and Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans has shown an interest in defensive backs in the past, including former Ohio State first-round pick Damon Arnette. Arnold starred as an All-American for the Crimson Tide under Nick Saban, and in Detroit he appeared in 24 games with 22 starts over two seasons. Across his NFL career, he has allowed a completion rate of 59% on 134 targeted passes, yielding 13.4 yards per reception, with one interception and 12 pass breakups to his credit.
If the Texans sign Arnold, he would be in competition for second-team reps behind starter Kamari Lassiter and alongside second-year defender Jaylin Smith, while competing with Pro Bowler and fellow 2024 draftee Derek Stingley Jr. As the Texans prepare for training camp, the timetable remains on track for players to report. The team plans for veterans to join the roster on July 28, with the full camp opening on July 21. This report originated with Texans Wire and centers on Arnold’s workout for Houston as interest from multiple clubs continues to swirl amid ongoing legal proceedings.
