Mikel Oyarzabal, the captain of Real Sociedad and a Spain forward, has delivered his most decisive rejection yet of rumors linking him with a Barcelona move. In an interview with El Chiringuito, he spoke with a blunt clarity that suggested he’s grown tired of constant questions about the Blaugrana and that turning down Barça is not only possible but has already been done by others.
During his conversation with El Chiringuito, Oyarzabal confronted the Barcelona topic with a directness that underscored his weariness with the ongoing speculation. His statements left little room for ambiguity. “Can you say no to Barcelona? Yes, you can. Of course you can. There are players who have told them no,” he said. “I’m immensely happy in San Sebastian, I consider Real Sociedad my home, it’s a place where I can live the life I want with my family. I’ve always said that I’m where I want to be.”
For the 29-year-old, this stance is not a departure but a reaffirmation. Barca Blaugranes has noted that Oyarzabal has repeatedly expressed contentment at La Real throughout the summer, even as reporters persisted in asking about a Camp Nou move. This latest reply reads like a firm line drawn by a player who wants to make his position unmistakably clear.
From Barcelona’s perspective, the message is unmistakable. The Catalan club has been pursuing attacking reinforcements this summer under complicated circumstances, and Oyarzabal has never been an easy target due to his lengthy contract with Anoeta and a €75 million release clause embedded in that deal. Despite Barça’s interest, the path to signing him was never straightforward, complicating negotiations and reinforcing the reality that a transfer would require overcoming significant financial and strategic hurdles.
At the same time, Barcelona remains focused on other targets. Julián Álvarez remains Barça’s principal objective, with Hansi Flick said to have communicated directly with the Argentina striker. Atlético Madrid, however, have publicly stated they have no intention of selling Álvarez, and the striker’s own request to leave the club has not altered Atlético’s stance in talks. Another suggested option, Eli Junior Kroupi, has attracted attention from several clubs this summer, but his situation is far from straightforward. Barcelona’s summer transfer window has been frenetic, marked by rapid developments as they chase multiple deals, some of which have involved Real Sociedad or linked players in various capacities.
Oyarzabal’s stance aligns with the long-standing identity he has shown at Real Sociedad since breaking into the first team more than a decade ago. He is the club captain, a two-time Copa del Rey winner with La Real, and a player who surpassed the 100-goal threshold in La Liga in the most recent season. The prospect of him moving to Barcelona has always felt incongruous with the image he has fostered in the Basque Country, and this latest interview has done little to alter that perception.
As the transfer window continues to move at a breakneck pace, Barcelona will likely hear more “no” responses from players who, like Oyarzabal, value loyalty, family, and personal happiness over a potential change in clubs. Oyarzabal’s decisive refusal is a clear signal to the market: not every star is available, and not every rumor will lead to a transfer. His resolute stance makes it clear that his future remains with Real Sociedad, at least for the foreseeable future, and that the door to Barcelona, for him, remains closed for now.
