Manchester City have completed the signing of England international Niamh Charles from Chelsea for £500,000, bringing the left-back to the club on a three-year contract after six seasons at Stamford Bridge. During her time with Chelsea, Charles made 173 appearances and developed into a key member of a squad that collected five Women’s Super League titles, four FA Cups, and three League Cups. She was also part of the Blues side that, under former manager Emma Hayes, reached the Women’s Champions League final in 2021 but were edged out by Barcelona.
“I’m really happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started,” Charles said, reflecting on her move, and noting that she began her career at Liverpool. “I’ve watched City from the outside and have played against them over the past few years; they’ve had great success this season. What they’re building as a team is something I wanted to be part of. It’s the perfect fit, and I hope we can have some good times together.”
Charles’ departure comes as City welcome Republic of Ireland international Katie McCabe, who joined from Arsenal, strengthening their ranks as they prepare for another busy campaign. With substantial experience in both the Women’s Super League and the Women’s Champions League, Charles is expected to offer invaluable guidance and quality as City seek to compete at the highest level while continuing to push for domestic and European silverware.
For City, the move also represents a chance for Charles to seek regular game time to cement a place in Sarina Wiegman’s England squad ahead of next year’s World Cup. She has earned 34 caps for the Lionesses and even scored a penalty in the shootout win over Spain in the Euro 2025 final. In Manchester, she will wear the number 21 shirt, taking over the slot left by Spain full-back Leila Ouahabi, who recently departed City for Chicago Stars FC.
City’s title-winning season in May, their first WSL triumph in ten years, has underscored the need for depth as they aim to contend in Europe. They have already added England forward Beth Mead, who moved from Arsenal at the close of the season, and ensured Khadija Shaw’s future with the club by securing a new four-year contract in May, just days after the prospect of a sale had loomed.
Therese Sjögren, City’s director of football, welcomed the arrival of Charles, saying, “To add a player of Niamh’s ability and experience to our squad after the success of last season is a huge positive. We’re all excited to see what she can bring, and despite all she has already achieved in the game, we firmly believe her best years are still to come. She has the drive to become a better player every day and to challenge her teammates to do the same.”
In other developments around the women’s game, Arsenal secured the free transfer signing of Spain defender Batlle, while West Ham announced the two-year deal for forward Salmon.
