There was a loud Thursday glass break at Front Office Sports from our friend Ryan: Jacob Tobey is no longer the Spurs’ lead play-by-play announcer after he was accused on social media of cheating on his girlfriend with the sister of a player on the team, according to sources. Spokespeople for both the Spurs and Tobey could not be reached for comment at the time. Many were taken aback that this could be considered a firing offense for Tobey, a reaction echoed by Colin Cowherd. He isn’t alone in his astonishment. People I spoke with from other NBA teams didn’t anticipate the matter being handled in this manner. That sentiment, however, touches on a separate question entirely: whether the Spurs can terminate an employee for this type of conduct. From a broad, layman’s reading of the situation, along with general principles of NBA employee contracts and Texas labor law, such an action appears likely within the franchise’s rights.
