Prime Minister Narendra Modi accompanied Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the final day of Modi’s visit to Australia to tour the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The occasion underscored the strong sporting bonds between India and Australia, highlighting how both nations can collaborate more deeply in the world of sports as they prepare to host major international events in the coming years.
During the visit, Modi presented former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh with a framed photograph from nearly two decades ago. The image, taken when Modi was the chief minister of Gujarat, captured a meeting with Waugh and served as a memento of the enduring friendship between the leaders and the sport’s enduring legacy. Modi also noted with pleasure the vibrant display of young talent he witnessed at the stadium, signaling optimism about the future of cricket and other sports in both countries.
In a post on X, Modi spoke about the opportunity for India and Australia to deepen cooperation across sports, youth development, infrastructure, and talent cultivation as they prepare to host significant global sporting events in the years ahead. He wrote that the potential for enhanced collaboration in sports, youth engagement, infrastructure, and talent development is immense, given the shared enthusiasm and strategic interests of the two nations.
Ahead of broader collaboration, the leaders unveiled a Roadmap on Sport Cooperation designed to expand cooperation in sports science and technology, talent development, infrastructure, trade, and tourism. Modi reiterated India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympics, following India’s hosting of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, signaling a continued push to position India prominently on the global sports stage.
Albanese announced a landmark decision: the opening match of the 2026-27 Big Bash League season would be held at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, marking the first BBL game to take place outside Australia. Modi welcomed the move, emphasizing that hosting a premier sporting league event in India would guarantee broad reach and substantial viewership, thereby benefiting the league and the sport’s profile in the country.
The Australian prime minister also lauded the storied cricket rivalry between the two nations, recalling the high attendance and intense energy that marked the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He paid tribute to cricket legends Steve Waugh and Lisa Sthalekar, describing them as icons who are deeply admired in both Australia and India. The two leaders also paused to visit the Shane Warne Stand at the MCG, sharing a moment of homage to one of the sport’s most celebrated figures.
The exchange between Modi and Albanese reflected a shared commitment to leveraging sport as a bridge for cultural exchange, economic partnership, and bilateral goodwill. The visit reinforced the notion that India and Australia can collaborate more closely beyond the pitch, using athletic excellence as a catalyst for broader cooperation in science, technology, education, and tourism, while continuing to celebrate the enduring legacies of cricket and other sports.
