Texans All-Pro Derek Stingley Jr. named top-3 CB in NFL for 2026 season

Derek Stingley Jr. has established himself as a two-time All-Pro cornerback for the Houston Texans and is widely regarded as one of the premier man-to-man lockdown corners in the NFL heading into the 2026 season. Although his numbers dipped slightly in the previous year, Stingley continued to demonstrate elite coverage skills, recording more than a dozen pass breakups and four interceptions as Houston clinched its best total of wins since 2012 and earned another playoff berth. While a Super Bowl remains the ultimate objective for the franchise, Stingley has blossomed into a cornerstone defender, potentially becoming the greatest Texans corner in the franchise’s history as he enters his fifth season.
So, where does Stingley stand among the top corners for the 2026 season? Sports Illustrated’s Karl Rasmussen ranked him as the seventh-best cornerback in the league. Patrick Surtain II earned the top spot for another Defensive Player of the Year-worthy campaign, with a surprising rise by Seattle’s nickel standout Devon Witherspoon landing at No. 2. Yet Stingley held his spot as the second-best outside corner, thanks to his fluid movement, precise timing, and knack for forcing turnovers. Rasmussen noted that Stingley has earned first-team All-Pro honors in each of the last two seasons and excels most in man coverage, where he can blank receivers on both deep vertical routes and shorter patterns. He is also a ballhawk who tracks the ball exceptionally well in the air. In fact, since 2023, only one cornerback in the NFL—Kerby Joseph, with 15 interceptions—has more picks than Stingley’s 14.
The Texans’ star defensive back has far exceeded the expectations that accompanied his selection as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 draft. Stingley leads the NFL with 46 passes defensed since 2023 and has repeatedly forced quarterbacks to complete less than half of their passes when targeting him during that stretch. Last season, he allowed 23 catches for under 200 yards and three touchdowns. That performance marked a dip from his breakout 2024 season, which had helped propel him to the status of the league’s highest-paid corner at the time. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, he yielded five catches for 57 yards on 19 targets between Weeks 8 and 13.
Stingley could have earned several first-place votes in the ranking exercise, but the honor of the NFL’s top defensive acknowledgment often hinges on a player’s broader impact and accolades. For Witherspoon, Rasmussen highlighted his blitzing and tackling as giving him a narrow edge over Stingley. Beyond his cover prowess, Witherspoon’s versatility—lining up at outside corner, in the slot, and even at linebacker for the Seahawks—earned him high praise. PFF graded him as the league’s top corner in 2025, delivering scores above 90 in run defense and pass rush, which reinforced his all-around value.
In the context of the Texans’ program, Stingley’s development remains a pillar for the team’s defensive identity. His ability to shut down top receivers in man coverage, paired with his playmaking instincts, continues to set the tone for Houston’s secondary. As the franchise returns to Reliant Stadium, a venue with deep roots in Texans lore, Stingley’s presence anchors a defense that eyes continued growth and sustained excellence. He remains a defining figure for a Texans squad that aspires to compete at the highest levels, leveraging his star status and elite ball skills as a blueprint for success in the modern NFL.
