Brent Venables named to preseason watch list

By admin — In News — July 10, 2026

Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables drew national attention on Friday when he was named to the Dodd Trophy preseason watch list for the 2026 season. The university announced that Venables is among the coaches under consideration for one of college football’s most respected coaching honors. The Dodd Trophy, named after the legendary Bobby Dodd who led the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, was established in 1976 to honor a Football Bowl Subdivision coach whose program embodies three core principles: scholarship, leadership, and integrity. The award looks beyond on-field success, recognizing coaches who prioritize academic achievement, community involvement, and the development of players beyond football.
Past recipients include notable leaders such as Curt Cignetti of Indiana, Marcus Freeman of Notre Dame, Nick Saban of Alabama, and Bill Snyder of Kansas State. The only Oklahoma head coach to win the award was Bob Stoops in 2003. Venables’s recognition aligns with the award’s ideals and with the way he has approached building a program at Oklahoma. The Dodd Trophy honors a holistic view of coaching success—how a program competes and how its players grow as individuals off the field, in classrooms, and within their communities.
Venables has consistently emphasized that success should be measured not only by victories and losses but also by the character and growth of his players. This perspective underpins his broader mission on campus and on the team, including the establishment of the SOUL Mission, which reflects his commitment to culture, leadership, and community service. Over the past four seasons, he has actively worked to rebuild Oklahoma’s culture, emphasizing leadership, academics, and player development while continuing to pursue competitive excellence on the field. While on-field results will influence his candidacy for the Dodd Trophy, his demonstrated dedication to leadership, academics, and student-athlete growth makes him a strong fit for what the award represents. If Oklahoma contends for championships in 2026, Venables could add another major accolade to his growing résumé.
