The Bengals offensive line is a bottom-5 unit in Warren Sharp’s rankings

Since Joe Burrow was drafted in 2020, talk about the Cincinnati Bengals’ offensive line has been nonstop. Late in some seasons it often felt like a corner had finally been turned, only for the line to betray that progress again at the start of the next year. But last season seemed different. It appeared the Bengals finally fielded a unit with talent and chemistry across all five starting positions. Amarius Mims has emerged as a rising star at right tackle, Dalton Risner stabilized the right guard spot after years of instability, Dylan Fairchild showed enough promise to be considered a long-term solution at left guard, and Orlando Brown Jr. remains a solid force at left tackle. Yet outsiders aren’t as optimistic as Bengals fans are.
Warren Sharp of Sharp Football Analysis released his rankings of all 32 NFL offensive lines and slotted the Bengals at 28th. He explained: Cincinnati chose to run it back with essentially the same line as a season ago, adding rookies Brian Parker and Connor Lew. When the primary five starters were on the field together, Bengals running backs averaged only 1.4 yards before contact per attempt, ranking 30th out of 48 qualified offensive line combinations. While his assessment is accurate in highlighting those struggles, it omits the respectable pass protection that allowed Joe Burrow to stay relatively upright, and it also doesn’t account for some of the backfield issues that cropped up when Jake Browning was the starting quarterback.
As the season progressed, the line’s issues in run blocking appeared to weigh less on the team than the defense’s performance did. The defense struggled throughout the year, and the most glaring hole remained at linebacker. That weakness dominated conversations about the unit, prompting discussions about what the front office could do to bolster the linebacker corps to shore up the defense as a whole. With the offense generally improving and the defense needing more attention, the focus for the Bengals going forward centers on balancing both sides of the ball to finally reclaim a consistent, championship-ready balance. For SEO, this narrative helps explain how the line’s trajectory interacts with defensive concerns and the team’s overall prospects.
