A key component of the Royals’ summer transfer strategy was always destined to be the acquisition of a fresh number 10, and that objective has now been achieved with the arrival of Josh Stokes. Reading have confirmed the season-long loan of the 22-year-old from Championship side Bristol City. He becomes Reading’s fourth signing of a transfer window that has picked up pace in recent weeks, following the additions of Kyreece Lisbie, versatile defender Udoka Godwin-Malife, and experienced forward Jacob Brown. There’s a clear pattern emerging: Reading are bringing in energetic, younger talent (apart from Brown). This mirrors some of their January business, which included fellow ex-Bristol City player Haydon Roberts and Benn Ward.
Leam Richardson spoke highly about the move: “We’re really pleased to bring Josh to Reading. He’s a player we’ve tracked for some time and one we believe has the qualities to make a real impact for us. He’s creative, positive in possession and has the ability to unlock defences, whether that’s with a pass, by carrying the ball or by contributing goals himself. He’s already shown what he can do in League One and at 22, we feel there’s still plenty more to come from him. Just as importantly, he’s got a fantastic attitude. He wants to improve, he’s hungry to work every day and he’s fully bought into what we’re trying to build here. We’re looking forward to working with him and helping him take the next steps in his career.”
Although he remains young, Stokes already has a substantial amount of first-team experience—over 100 appearances. That is a notable takeaway: he isn’t merely a raw prospect; he is a player who has grown accustomed to men’s football. Stokes spent his early years in youth setups at Ipswich Town and AFC Sudbury before breaking through at National League outfit Aldershot Town. He enjoyed an outstanding 2023/24 season, recording 15 goals and eight assists in 45 league appearances, a tally that earned him a permanent move to Bristol City midway through that campaign (though he was loaned back to Aldershot for the rest of the season).
Subsequently, Stokes embarked on a couple of loan spells in the third tier. His first loan, with Cambridge United in 2024/25, yielded seven goals in 32 appearances. Despite Cambridge’s overall struggles that season, culminating in relegation to the fourth tier, Stokes’s individual form earned him Cambridge’s player of the season and young player of the season awards. The 2025/26 campaign presented a more mixed picture. He signed a new contract in June that year, extending his deal to 2028, and made two League Cup appearances, but a broken metatarsal disrupted the first half of the season. In the second half, he went on loan again, this time to Stockport County in League One, where he found the net five times in 26 appearances across league, playoffs, and the EFL Trophy. Stockport enjoyed a stronger campaign than Cambridge, ultimately finishing the season with a playoff defeat to Bolton Wanderers.
The move to Reading represents another important step in Stokes’s development, offering him the chance to demonstrate his creativity and goal-threat on a regular basis while adapting to a new environment and league. For Reading, the loan signals a commitment to injecting pace, versatility, and forward-thinking attacking options into the squad. With Stokes’ record of contributing goals and assists, coupled with his proven ability to perform against varied levels of competition, he has the potential to become a key creative outlet in Reading’s midfield and attacking play.
In summary, Josh Stokes’s arrival underscores Reading’s intent to blend youthful energy with experience and to build a team capable of unlocking stubborn defences in the Championship and beyond. As Richardson highlighted, the focus is on a player with creative instincts, a willingness to work hard, and the attitude to integrate quickly into the club’s evolving project. If Stokes can translate his League One form to the higher level and continue the rapid development trajectory he has shown, Reading could reap meaningful rewards from this season-long loan.
