Between a rock and a hard place: Dayot Upamecano asked to choose between Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has belonged to football’s superstars. Lionel Messi of Argentina and Erling Haaland of Norway; France’s explosive attacking quartet of Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise, and Ousmane Dembélé; England’s Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham—you name it, they are all operating at the peak of their powers. Naturally, performances of this caliber invite comparison. Yet choosing between these footballing giants is like judging whether the Mona Lisa is superior to Michelangelo—both are masterpieces in their own right.
Dayot Upamecano, Bayern Munich’s French defender, understands this dilemma better than most. He was recently asked by Sky’s Florian Plettenberg to pick between his Bayern teammate Harry Kane and his compatriot Kylian Mbappé. Upamecano didn’t hesitate to dodge the trap, moving with the same deftness he uses to evade an aggressive press. “I’m very happy with Harry Kane at Bayern,” the 27-year-old defender said with a smile (via iMiaSanMia). “But here, in our French attack, we also have a lot of quality, and that’s great.”
Both attackers have been in scintillating form for club and country this season. Kane has tallied a staggering 61 goals and seven assists across all competitions for Bayern, while Mbappé has found the back of the net 42 times and provided six assists for Real Madrid. In the World Cup, England’s talisman has registered six goals and one assist, whereas Mbappé has eight goals and three assists for Les Bleus.
Deciding between Mbappé and Kane may be nearly impossible, but one thing remains certain: it’s a blessing to witness two of football’s very best operating at their peak. If you were in Upamecano’s shoes, who would you pick?
