Shamar Evans, a four-star linebacker in the 2028 class, is building a stronger connection with the Florida Gators as he progresses through the recruiting cycle. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound standout from Ruston High School in Louisiana has visited Gainesville twice in the last three months, beginning with an April trip ahead of the Orange and Blue Game. He came away impressed by what he saw in the Swamp, noting the practice, facilities, fan support, and Florida’s overall culture as standout aspects. “Everything was amazing and exceeded my expectations in many ways,” Evans told Gators Online after that initial visit. “First, the fanbase is immaculate. You can tell the difference between a culture that really wants it and one that doesn’t. Florida has definitely climbed their way into the top five; no doubt.”
Evans returned to Florida last month for the Grille in the Ville summer cookout, where he connected with position coach Greg Gasparato and defensive coordinator Brad White and got to know other targets on the Gators’ board. “It was amazing,” he told Gators Online. “Gainesville has a deep place in my heart. I love it out here… Every staff member here has energy. It’s amazing. Every time I come out here, I feel like I’m at home. I know for sure I could come here and get developed right away, especially given the staff’s level of experience at my position.”
Despite the favorable impressions, Evans says he’s not yet focused on a short list. He’s keeping a watchful eye on programs that stay in regular contact as he heads into the fall, including Alabama, LSU, Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Texas A&M. Ole Miss and LSU, in particular, feel like home-state ties because Evans played high school football in Louisiana and Mississippi. Florida’s staff also has ties to the Bayou State, with Jon Sumrall and several coaches having roots at Tulane, which adds another layer to the Gators’ appeal.
Meanwhile, Alabama, Mississippi State, and Texas were early contenders but appear to be trending less consistently for Evans. Georgia and Ohio State have shown interest, yet Florida continues to position itself as a major priority in Evans’ recruitment. Evans intends to visit multiple programs over the next year, with another Gainesville visit during the fall seen as a key step toward a potential commitment to the Gators.
Nationally, Evans is ranked in the mix across major outlets. 247Sports places him at No. 181 overall and No. 13 at linebacker in its standard rankings, while the 247Composite lists him at No. 145 overall and No. 11 at linebacker. Rivals places him at No. 173 overall and No. 13 at linebacker, with its industry rankings showing him at No. 134 and No. 11, respectively. Among the consensus projections, Rivals’ industry data currently has Florida atop the predictions list with 35.0% likelihood, followed by Alabama at 21.0%, Ole Miss at 9.8%, Ohio State at 8.2%, and Georgia Tech at 8.2%. ESPN slots Evans at No. 137 on its ESPN Junior 300, underscoring the perception of his potential and the interest from major programs as he moves deeper into his high school career.
