Manchester United’s efforts to overhaul their midfield have taken another twist. The club had appeared to reach a comprehensive agreement with Atalanta over the transfer of Ederson last month, and they had also secured personal terms with the Brazilian midfielder. However, sources close to the situation indicated earlier today that United decided to terminate the deal after the player’s medical results failed to satisfy the club. Atalanta have already been informed of United’s change in plans.
Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes was on the verge of a switch to Atletico Madrid, but that move reportedly collapsed despite an agreement between the clubs. Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte claims Gomes will remain in the Premier League, just not necessarily with the team initially linked to him. The report suggests that Manchester United and Liverpool have both shown interest in Gomes, inquiring about the feasibility of a transfer and the terms involved. The young midfielder had appeared set for a €45 million transfer to La Liga, but that route now seems unlikely for the time being.
Globo Esporte also notes that United had cooled on a deal for Ederson after his medical, despite initial optimism. In that scenario, Gomes has emerged as the alternative option in United’s sights. The 25-year-old had reportedly been of interest to United since January, but a move to Old Trafford was delayed by the departure of Ruben Amorim, which disrupted those plans.
According to the Brazilian outlet, United resumed discussions with Gomes at the end of the previous season, but by then the Atletico Madrid deal had progressed to an advanced stage. Atletico were also negotiating to sign Bernardo Silva after his exit from Manchester City, with super agent Jorge Mendes handling both potential deals. Yet Silva chose Real Madrid, a decision that reportedly angered Atletico’s board and prompted them to reconsider Gomes as a signing.
As the situation stands, United appear to be keeping their options open while also monitoring developments surrounding Gomes. The evolving market has seen several high-profile links and dramatic shifts, underscoring how fluid the midfield landscape remains ahead of the new campaign.
