Pittsburgh, AP — The Milwaukee Brewers moved quickly Friday to bolster their injury-plagued rotation by signing free-agent right-hander Bryse Wilson. The veteran added to the NL Central-leading club’s depleted pitching staff after being released by the Chicago Cubs earlier in the week. Wilson appeared in relief for Philadelphia once this season and worked twice for the Cubs, posting a total of seven earned runs over 9 1/3 innings. Over nine seasons in the majors, he has pitched for six organizations, including a two-year stint with Milwaukee from 2023 to 2024.
At 28 years old, Wilson wasted little time in accepting Milwaukee’s offer, saying he didn’t entertain other opportunities. “As soon as they made an offer, I signed and didn’t talk with other teams,” Wilson said before Milwaukee’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. “I’ve had success here. It’s the right fit.”
Milwaukee also reshuffled its roster to accommodate the addition. Right-hander Drew Rom was optioned to Triple-A Nashville, while right-hander Easton McGee was designated for assignment. In addition, the Brewers sent left-handed reliever Rob Zastryzny to Nashville to begin a rehab assignment after an extended absence due to a left upper-lat strain that sidelined him since May 31.
Milwaukee has been forced to manage with a hit pitching staff, and Wilson’s arrival provides depth as the team navigates a stretch of frequent games and ongoing injuries. The Brewers’ bullpen and starting depth have been tested all season, with several pitchers unavailable for various reasons, making Wilson’s versatility and experience valuable as they push toward maintaining their strong position in the league standings.
The Brewers’ front office has emphasized practicality in recent acquisitions, prioritizing immediate help for an untenable situation. Wilson’s track record includes roles as both a starter and a reliever, which could give Milwaukee flexibility in how they deploy him across outings as they seek to stabilize a rotation that has dealt with multiple setbacks. His familiarity with the organization and the surrounding atmosphere should help him acclimate quickly as he prepares to contribute in the coming weeks.
Until Wilson joins the mound for Milwaukee, the team will continue to monitor each returning pitcher and adapt its strategies accordingly. The addition underscores the Brewers’ willingness to act decisively to preserve their lead in the division and to provide their pitching staff with the depth necessary to contend through the grueling stretch of the season.
