RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL — Maddie Marsh, Pendleton Heights High School senior and a two-time All-American who has also captured three state titles, added another major accolade to her rapidly growing resume: an international gold medal. After navigating a challenging opening bout, Marsh surged through the rest of the competition, culminating in a dominating 10-0 victory in the final to claim the Women’s Wrestling 65-kilogram championship at the U-20 Pan American Games on Friday afternoon in Rio de Janeiro.
Marsh was one of seven Americans to win gold across the 10 weight classes in the women’s wrestling division. Her path to the title included an intense opening match against a competitor from her host country, which Marsh narrowly won 3-2 by decision. She then defeated Mexico’s Valeria Pacheco by pin in the second round, having already built a 6-0 lead before finishing the match in the first period. In the championship bout, Marsh faced Colombia’s Shantallee Bonalde and defeated her decisively, 10-0, by technical superiority.
The 65 kg weight class, roughly 143 pounds, followed a round-robin format in which Marsh stood out as the sole wrestler to win all three of her matches. Bonalde had previously edged Pacheco in the first round, 8-7, but then lost to Camargo in the second, 10-1. Marsh’s unblemished record in the division highlighted her relentless offense and strategic strength, sealing her status as the gold medalist in her category.
In addition to Marsh’s triumph, several American wrestlers claimed gold across other weight classes: Sarissa Tucker at 50 kg, Aubree Gutierrez at 53 kg, Marlee Solomon at 55 kg, Molly Allen at 57 kg, Gretchen Donally at 72 kg, and Jael Miller at 76 kg. Marsh’s victory not only added to the United States’ overall gold tally but also underscored the depth of the country’s young women’s wrestling pipeline.
Following the tournament, Marsh will depart directly from Brazil to participate in the 2026 United States Marine Corps Junior Nationals, scheduled for July 9–18 in Fargo, North Dakota. She finished as a runner-up at last year’s highly regarded national tournament and has earned All-American honors in each of the past two seasons. This latest title in Brazil marks a significant milestone in Marsh’s evolving career, signaling her readiness to compete at the highest levels on the world stage.
Marsh’s performance stands as a landmark achievement for a rising star who has already made her mark at the high school and junior levels. Her international gold adds to a growing list of championships and honors, reflecting not only her skill and tenacity but also the strength of the U.S. program in developing young women’s wrestling talent. As she continues to balance a demanding schedule with academic commitments, Marsh’s trajectory suggests she will remain a prominent figure in collegiate and national competitions for years to come, inspiring younger athletes and elevating the profile of women’s wrestling across the country.
