Pine Grove native and former MLS standout David Horst has vivid memories of the 1994 World Cup, a tournament that left a lasting imprint on him as a young fan. Horst, who graduated from Pine Grove Area High School in 2004, was eight years old when the World Cup first arrived in the United States. For him, and like many kids his age, that event marked a turning point in his life and in his budding soccer dreams. “The cool thing about the ’94 World Cup was that it was the first time I ever saw soccer on television,” Horst recalled. “Back then, you didn’t have, you know, cable television and access to everything that you have now. Especially growing up in Pine Grove. You didn’t have that access.” He remembers watching the memorable United States versus Colombia match on June 22, a 2-1 U.S. victory. The game is often highlighted for Andres Escobar’s 35th-minute own goal that gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead, followed by Earnie Stewart’s second-half tally that extended the lead, despite Adolfo Valencia’s late strike in the 90th minute. Horst also recalls the U.S. holding its own against eventual champions Brazil on July 4, 1994, a match decided by a late Bebeto goal in the 72nd minute that produced a 1-0 defeat for the Americans. That World Cup wasn’t just a tournament; it was the moment Horst began to picture his own future in soccer. “I just remember telling my parents I was like, ‘That’s what I want to do, that right there, seeing those guys on TV, is what I want to do someday,’” he said, reflecting on how the experience planted the seed of his lifelong ambition. “It was the first time that the thought ever crossed my mind.”
From those early roots to a professional career, Horst’s path through soccer began to take shape with the support of a community network. The local soccer association, founded by his mother, Linda — a former Pine Grove Area School District teacher — along with a cadre of devoted coaches, helped him navigate a successful high school tenure and the early steps of a national-stage career. After finishing high school, Horst attended Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where he helped lead the Monarchs to back-to-back NCAA Men’s College Cup Sweet 16 appearances. He earned recognition as the Colonial Athletic Association Defender of the Year in 2006 and again in 2007, underscoring his growing reputation at the college level. During his college years, Horst also played in the USL Premier Development League with the Reading Rage and the Hampton Roads Piranhas, where he was named the league’s Defender of the Year in 2007.
Horst’s entry into Major League Soccer came in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, where Real Salt Lake selected him 14th overall, the last pick of the first round. He spent the 2008 through 2010 seasons with Real Salt Lake, appearing in three league matches and going on loan to the Austin Aztex in 2009 and the Puerto Rico Islanders in 2010. The breakthrough came in 2011 with the Portland Timbers, where he played 39 matches over three seasons, establishing himself as a reliable defender. Horst later moved to the Houston Dynamo, continuing his MLS career and contributing his experience and leadership as a steadfast presence on the back line. His journey—from a Pine Grove youth soccer player to a professional defender in Major League Soccer—reflects a community-supported dream realized through perseverance, skill, and a lifelong love of the game.
