When Alabama extended a scholarship to Kingston Preyear, the moment carried more weight than a typical offer for a four-star quarterback. For a lifelong Crimson Tide devotee, the invitation represented the chance to fulfill a dream that had simmered for years. Now, the Benjamin Russell High School standout from Alexander City has officially pledged to Kalen DeBoer’s program, choosing Alabama over Florida and Vanderbilt. In a conversation with Chad Simmons of Rivals, Preyear laid out exactly why the Crimson Tide stood apart from the rest, and it all traced back to one unforgettable visit.
Preyear noted that Florida had led his recruitment for most of the process. That dynamic shifted dramatically after he worked out for Alabama’s coaches in June. “It was my last visit when Alabama made the move for me,” he said. “I was throwing really well, and Coach Ellis pulled me aside and told me, ‘You’re going to play at the University of Alabama. I don’t care where you’re going, you’re going to play here.’” That exchange struck a chord with the rising quarterback.
He left Tuscaloosa energized, accompanied by his father and brothers, and spent the following weeks praying over the decision. Not long after, he knew Alabama was the right fit. Equally important was the chance to experience Alabama’s offensive staff coaching him up in person.
“This was my first time really being around them while they were coaching, and I loved the way Coach Grubb, Coach Ellis, and Coach Morris coached me,” Preyear explained. “I was like, ‘Yeah, this is where I want to be.’”
For Alabama, signing Preyear continues a clear pattern under DeBoer: the program has made quarterback recruiting a core strength, consistently attracting top passers with a development-first philosophy. Alabama’s storied football legacy also weighed in, but Preyear underscored that quarterback development ultimately tipped the scales. “They can develop the crap out of a quarterback,” he said, adding, “Then you’ve got the rich tradition of winning. They’ve been winning since I was a kid growing up an Alabama fan. Playing for Alabama is every kid’s dream. It all came down to development and the relationships with the coaches.”
For a local prospect who grew up cheering for the Crimson Tide, the decision carried profound meaning. “It means the world,” Preyear said. “I’m truly blessed and highly favored by God to even have the opportunity to play for and commit to the school I grew up watching. It was my dream school.”
Preyear told Alabama of his decision privately on June 28 before going public. One of his most cherished recruitment memories came from a phone call with quarterbacks coach Ryan Ellis, a moment he still cherishes as his relationship with the Alabama staff began to take shape. As he embarks on the next chapter, the quarterback’s path to Tuscaloosa is rooted in a transformative visit, a compelling pitch about development, and a lifelong love for a program that has shaped his aspirations from childhood.
