Timberwolves Coach Chris Finch Makes Heartfelt LeBron James Pitch

LeBron James remains the Timberwolves’ most coveted free-agent target, even though Minnesota has not been mentioned as often among the leaders in the running as Cleveland, Miami, and Philadelphia. Timberwolves coach Chris Finch acknowledged in a Bleacher Report NBA Summer League livestream with insiders Jake Fischer and Marc Stein that Minnesota is competing with some of the NBA’s largest markets for the four-time MVP, while asserting that the franchise offers something those other clubs cannot.
During the discussion, Finch said it’s an honor to even be considered for a player of James’s caliber, crediting the organization, its players, and the culture the team has built, as well as Tim Connelly’s strong relationships within the league and with LeBron’s camp. Finch stressed that Minnesota believes it has created the right basketball environment for James at this stage of his career.
“It’s an honor to be even in consideration to get a player like LeBron,” Finch said. “I think that’s a credit to our organization, our guys, the culture that we’ve been able to build, Tim Connelly’s relationship with the league and all the key members in and around LeBron’s team.” He added that the Timberwolves believe they have assembled a basketball situation that aligns with what James is seeking. “We feel our basketball situation is ideal,” Finch said. “I’m sure that they recognize all these things.”
The remarks come as James evaluate his options after telling the Los Angeles Lakers on June 30 that he intends to play elsewhere next season. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Thursday that teams interested in James have been making direct recruiting pitches through Rich Paul, his agent, with some organizations even sending voice notes. Finch, however, joked that he would not be among those making voice notes. “Well, it won’t be me,” Finch said with a laugh. “I don’t even know how to send a voice note, so I’m not all that technologically proficient.”
Beyond the humor, Finch emphasized that Minnesota still believes it has a legitimate shot. “I think everybody feels like they’re still in it,” he said. He praised Paul and James’s camp for maintaining professionalism amid the enormous attention surrounding the decision, noting that they have handled pitches and scenarios with honesty and transparency while remaining respectful and accommodating. “They’ve made everybody feel like they genuinely have an opportunity for a genuine win,” Finch said.
LeBron James’s ongoing free-agent status continues to link him to Minnesota, with the Timberwolves’ connection intensified by reports from The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski that the team’s recruiting strategy has centered on basketball fit. Finch reiterated that the Timberwolves’ approach has focused on presenting James with the optimal basketball environment in which he can contribute and potentially finish his career. The team believes its culture, development pipeline, and the synergy among players and leadership set Minnesota apart in what is shaping up to be one of the most discussed free-agent roadmaps in recent memory.
