Can Sam LaPorta Return to Pro Bowl Form in 2026?

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

Sam LaPorta enters the 2026 season with plenty to prove after an injury-shortened year that seemed on track to be another productive stretch. A herniated disc in his back cut his 2025 campaign short and necessitated offseason surgery, forcing the emerging tight end into months of rehabilitation. As training camp nears, the Detroit Lions are hoping LaPorta will be fully healthy and ready to contribute again, reestablishing himself as one of the team’s most dependable offensive weapons.
During organized team activities, LaPorta was spotted taking part in walkthroughs and gradually increasing his workload. Detroit has approached his recovery with caution, but all indicators point to him being available when the camp opens at the end of July. That news is particularly welcome for an offense that aims to remain among the NFL’s most explosive units.
LaPorta quickly established himself as one of the league’s premier young tight ends right from his rookie season. He finished his first year with 86 receptions for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns, delivering a debut campaign that ranks among the best ever for a tight end. His rookie success placed him in elite company: only Mike Ditka, Rob Gronkowski, and LaPorta have recorded at least 10 receiving touchdowns as rookie tight ends. He also eclipsed Ditka’s longstanding rookie receptions record for a tight end, cementing himself as one of the brightest young stars in the league.
Now healthy, LaPorta will begin the next phase of his career under new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing. The coaching change could be exactly what he needs to recapture the productivity that made him one of the NFL’s most dangerous pass catchers. Petzing spent the previous three seasons as the Arizona Cardinals’ offensive coordinator and played a significant role in Trey McBride’s rise to elite status among tight ends. Under Petzing, McBride developed into one of the league’s most productive players at the position, posting back-to-back seasons with more than 110 receptions and 1,100 receiving yards.
While Petzing’s offense clearly has a track record of featuring a tight end, LaPorta’s situation in Detroit is different. McBride, in Arizona, was the primary receiving option, which allowed him to command a large share of the passing game. LaPorta, by contrast, shares the field with what is arguably one of the NFL’s deepest collections of skill-position talent. Amon-Ra St. Brown remains Jared Goff’s most reliable target, Jameson Williams can threaten defenses on every snap, and Jahmyr Gibbs stands out as an explosive receiving back. With so many playmakers demanding touches, it’s unlikely LaPorta will see the same target volume that McBride enjoyed in Arizona.
Even so, LaPorta is poised to remain a central figure in Detroit’s offense, particularly in the red zone, where his size, hands, and precise route-running create tough matchups for defenses. If he can stay healthy throughout the season, there is every reason to expect continued production and a meaningful impact on the Lions’ aerial attack.
