Mets Announce Decision on Mark Vientos Amid Dire Stretch

The New York Mets have endured a tough July and now face a critical stretch without a key reserve player. On Friday, the club announced that first baseman Mark Vientos would be placed on the 10-day injured list after suffering a fractured hand when he was hit by a pitch in Thursday’s win over the Kansas City Royals. Manager Andy Green had previously painted a bleak early picture of the injury, suggesting surgery might be necessary. The latest update, however, leaves room for the possibility that Vientos could return sooner than initially feared, even as the club will still miss him during an important period.
According to ESPN, Vientos briefly remained in Thursday’s game before being pulled in the following inning. The report also indicated that Vientos had been removed from the starting lineup amid a season-long struggle. “Vientos is batting .211 with 11 homers and 35 RBIs in 73 games,” the piece noted. His ongoing struggles, coupled with the emergence of Jared Young at first base and Green’s plan to deploy Francisco Alvarez, Francisco Lindor, and Juan Soto at designated hitter on days they don’t appear in the field, have largely relegated Vientos to a platoon role against left-handed pitching. Green voiced his disappointment over Vientos’ difficulties, noting the long absence ahead as a source of concern. “I’m just disappointed for what he’s going through right now today,” Green said.
For the 2026 season, the Mets entered hoping to erase the disappointment of 2025, a campaign that unraveled in the latter half and slipped from playoff contention on the final weekend. Instead, the team has stumbled out of the gates, posting two prolonged losing runs and settling in the basement of the National League. With playoff hopes already fading, many insiders anticipate the Mets will take an aggressive tack at the trade deadline, potentially selling off assets.
Some have even floated the possibility of a larger shake-up, with WFAN’s Mike Francesa suggesting this week that the club could consider trading star Francisco Lindor in the near term. Joe Pantorno of AMNY reported that the Mets are likely to shop several starting pitchers, including offseason acquisition Freddy Peralta. The club has already moved David Peterson to the Chicago Cubs, and Pantorno hinted that another notable name could be earmarked for a blockbuster deal. “Clay Holmes will also be in demand on the market even while he’s recovering from a broken leg,” Pantorno wrote, noting that the veteran right-hander was throwing in the outfield at Citi Field ahead of Thursday’s series finale against the Royals.
However, the Mets have drawn a line at major departures: Pantorno suggested that a bright spot in their plans remains intact, with promising young pitcher Jonah Tong unlikely to be dealt, signaling that the organization’s restructuring would target established assets rather than a wholesale youth movement. The coming weeks will reveal how far the club is willing to go in retooling, and whether the Vientos injury further reshapes a roster already bracing for a turbulent period.
