A’s get trounced by the White Sox 14-1

The 41-52 Athletics visited the 47-45 Chicago White Sox at Rate Field in Chicago today, a matchup underscoring two very different points in their seasons. While Oakland has been mired in a prolonged skid, the Southsiders have orchestrated one of the most dramatic turnarounds in baseball compared with last year’s performance, creating a narrative of frustration for the A’s and renewed optimism for the Sox.
On the mound, Jacob Lopez drew the start for Oakland, facing off against 26-year-old right-hander Sean Burke for the White Sox. Lopez looked sharp early, retiring the first five batters before handing the ball over to Aaron Civale. Civale showed his typical efficiency through the early innings, but the wheels began to come off in the bottom of the fifth. Chase Meidroth started the rally with a sharp line-drive double to left. Andrew Benintendi followed with a double, driving in Meidroth to put the Sox on the board. Civale then walked Kyle Teel, and Tristan Peters lined a single to left, driving Benintendi home. Sam Antonacci kept the pressure on with a single to right, scoring Teel. Elvis Alvarado came in to relieve Civale with no outs in the fifth.
Miguel Vargas delivered a sacrifice fly to center, bringing home Peters and giving Chicago a 4-0 lead. Meanwhile, Burke was rolling, having surrendered just two hits through the early going and appearing to be in control as the seventh inning approached. The A’s finally cracked Burke’s aura of dominance when Tyler Soderstrum launched a solo homer to right, his 14th of the season, to put Oakland on the board.
However, the bottom of the seventh proved to be a calamity for the visitors. Justin Sterner was rocked, and Kyle Teel drew a walk ahead of a Tristan Peters homer that cleared the bases and extended the White Sox’ lead. Peters’ long ball plated Teel and gave Chicago a commanding advantage. Sam Antonacci walked, and Munetaka Murakami followed with a double, driving in Antonacci. Miguel Vargas then ripped a ground-rule double, scoring Murakami and pushing the score even higher. With the score at 8-1, Mason Barnett came on in relief for Sterner with no outs in the inning, and the onslaught continued.
Oakland’s misfortunes persisted as Andrew Benintendi doubled to drive in another run, and Tristan Peters completed the cycle with a triple, capping a night that had the White Sox celebrating offensively. The last White Sox player to hit for the cycle in franchise history was José Abreu on September 9, 2017, against the San Francisco Giants, and while Peters didn’t complete the official cycle himself, his domination was a talking point as Chicago surged forward.
The eighth inning saw Carlos Cortes entering to pitch for Chicago. He worked a clean frame against the A’s, fanning Murakami but yielding a Miguel Vargas homer to left that added to the Sox’ already-impressive tally. Chase Meidroth continued the Oakland offense with a single, driving in Montgomery to end the scoring for the visitors on a note of late-night consolation.
The final tally stood at 14-1 in favor of the Chicago White Sox, a stark statement about the disparity between the two teams on this day. The loss extended Oakland’s losing streak to seven games in a row, a troubling slide that will demand a quick reset for the A’s as they shift their focus toward the next series. In contrast, Chicago’s offensive barrage underscored the dramatic improvement the White Sox have shown this season, signaling that their turnaround is real and impactful for the rest of their campaign.
