Chris Cenac’s Celtics Debut: Three Reasons for Excitement originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here. Cenac came off the bench for his Boston Celtics debut in NBA Summer League action Friday in Las Vegas. When the moment mattered, he found his way onto the floor, and he already showed that he belonged. The No. 27 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft after a single season at Houston, Cenac joined an established team that could limit his playing time early. Yet, at least on Friday night, he looked like he could be a real contributor.
Cenac demonstrated his clutch gene in the closing minutes. He nailed a catch-and-shoot three-pointer while trailing by three with one second left in regulation, forcing overtime, and the Celtics ultimately secured the win. Cenac is rangy and capable of spacing the floor, but to reach his ceiling, he’ll need to contribute defensively as well, particularly protecting the rim. That aspect came easily on Friday, as Cenac blocked four shots. If that level of rim protection continues, his minutes could rise significantly.
Overall, Cenac delivered a well-rounded performance and offered another encouraging sign for his future. He finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while also going 2-for-4 from three (5-for-13 from the field) and notching his only free throw attempt. He showed clutch shooting, played well around the rim, and filled up the stat sheet, marking a promising and impressive debut.
