EDN BOYS BASKETBALL AWARDS: Milleville earns top defensive honor

ALTAMONT — Not many players had as big an impact on their team as Kade Milleville did for Altamont this past season. When Milleville played well, the Indians played well, and he delivered at precisely the moments they needed him most. Milleville helped the team capture their first regional championship since 2023 and the fifth under head coach John Niebrugge. “He’s my all-time leader in blocks and rebounds,” Niebrugge said. “He does it all. With his length, he can move, contest, and do the things a defensive coach wants.” Milleville finished the year with 155 defensive rebounds, 60 steals, 36 blocks, four charges, and 76 deflections. Yet his greatest value came in his versatility on defense, able to guard multiple positions with ease.
“He can guard anyone,” Niebrugge noted. “He has excellent timing, can guard the ball on the wing or on top, gets his hands in passing lanes, and, as he’s grown older, he’s gotten better at anticipating plays before they happen.” Milleville acknowledged his own limitations and the work needed to overcome them. “I’m definitely not the quickest guy out there, so I have to time things and be in the right spots,” he said. “I haven’t always been a good defender— I was horrid at defense until my junior year.” Niebrugge described Milleville as about as complete a player as you’ll find. “At his size, he has to get down low and guard a match-up, but his length helps him stay in front of people,” Niebrugge explained. “My guards in the past were really good at pushing you one way and taking you out of the middle of the floor, but we did a lot more switching with Kade than I ever did before. He’s not necessarily on the same type of player every night, so you have to know the personnel well, and he’s smart enough to know which type of player he’s up against. That makes him a complete basketball player.”
Milleville finished his four-year career with the most defensive rebounds ever recorded under Niebrugge’s tenure, totaling 472 defensive boards. More often than not, Milleville’s defensive prowess sparked the offense. “When he grabs a rebound, it can turn into a natural fast break,” Niebrugge said. “He’s either firing a pass ahead for an assist or dribbling up the floor and driving our offense.” Playing for Niebrugge means committing to maximum effort on defense every game. There will be nights when the offense isn’t clicking, but the defense remains steady, and Milleville embodied that consistency throughout the season.
That standard is something Milleville chooses to uphold. “Being held to a standard makes you a better person, but it’s definitely not easy,” Milleville said. “Coach—aside from my parents—has been the biggest influence on my development.” The expectation that defense never has an off night remains a cornerstone of his game, and Milleville embraced that discipline, contributing to Altamont’s resilient, championship-contending run.
