Vikings Rumor Watch: The Broncos for J.J. McCarthy, a New DT, Kyler Murray

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

The early portion of July is generally the Vikings’ slow period, and for the most part that holds true, aside from a few circulating rumors. Rookies are slated to report to training camp on July 26, which is about two weeks away, but in the meantime it’s worth taking a look at the first batch of rumors for the week.
The visualization shows Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy scouting the field from the pocket during first-quarter action against Chicago at U.S. Bank Stadium. On November 16, 2025, McCarthy is positioned to deliver a pass as Minnesota begins its divisional matchup with the Bears and starts working through the early portion of its offensive game plan. One rumor suggests the Broncos would be a good fit for J.J. McCarthy as a backup quarterback. Podcaster David Marshall discussed this on the David Talks Broncos show last week, noting that McCarthy appeared to struggle after leaving Michigan. Marshall argued that McCarthy, a former National Champion at Michigan, possesses the traits and tools teams seek and could thrive operating an offense under Sean Payton and Davis Webb, given his experience in a pro-style system under Jim Harbaugh. He added that McCarthy’s potential would lie more in serving as a franchise backup rather than a long-term starter, especially since Denver already has Bo Nix as a potential franchise quarterback. Marshall also pointed out that McCarthy would need to refine his mechanics and footwork, areas where the Broncos typically emphasize improvement.
The notion that McCarthy should request a trade out of Minnesota to become Denver’s backup makes little sense, as there is no clear incentive for him to leave the Vikings to assume a secondary role in Denver.
Another rumor circulating suggests Minnesota should explore adding free-agent DaQuan Jones. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox highlighted Jones among seven defensive free agents who could attract new teams. Jones, who will turn 35 in December, missed multiple games with a calf injury this past season but has a track record as a starting-caliber interior defender who has started every game since his sophomore year in 2015. In 2023, he appeared in 12 games for the Buffalo Bills, recording 22 tackles, three sacks, and three tackles for loss. Jones is noted for his robust run-stopping anchor and his ability to penetrate to bolster an interior pass rush.
Today’s discussion reflects optimism about bolstering the Vikings’ interior defensive line, with Jones highlighted as a potential fit given his experience and run-stopping ability. The idea is to add depth and steadiness up the middle, particularly for a team prioritizing a stout run defense and interior disruption. If Minnesota pursued Jones, it would align with a broader strategy of reinforcing the defensive front to improve overall pressure and containment.
