Manchester United deny reports they have pulled out of Ederson transfer

Manchester United are denying reports that the club has walked away from a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson, despite claims from Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas. Fabrizio Romano recently suggested that United would not complete the transfer for the 27-year-old after agreeing a deal with the Serie A side. It was reported that United pivoted away following Ederson’s medical tests, which allegedly flagged a problem. However, United are pushing back against these claims, asserting that the process remains underway and no final decision has been reached.
Strengthening the midfield has been a priority for Manchester United this summer, especially in the wake of Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s long-term injury while on World Cup duty with Uruguay. The club has nonetheless faced a string of setbacks in its pursuit of key targets. They pulled out of talks with Elliott Anderson due to Nottingham Forest’s substantial asking price, and United were then outbid by Tottenham Hotspur for Mateus Fernandes after Spurs agreed to meet West Ham United’s £85 million valuation.
Ederson appeared poised to move to Old Trafford when United initially reached a deal with Atalanta, but that transfer now seems unlikely. The summer transfer window officially opened on June 15, and United had yet to secure their first signing. That could still change in the near future, as the Red Devils are expected to announce the signing of Andrey Santos, who has already completed his medical after agreeing a £50 million deal with Chelsea.
As United navigate a complex window, the narrative around Ederson remains one of tension and uncertainty. The club continues to insist that discussions are ongoing and that no definitive decision has been made, even as speculation swirls about potential alternatives and the evolving priorities of Erik ten Hag’s squad. Fans remain hopeful that the midfielder overhaul, a focal point of the club’s summer agenda, will gain momentum with concrete announcements in the coming weeks. If United can finalize targeted additions while balancing wage structures and squad depth, they may still close in on crucial signings before the transfer window closes.
