Michael Edwards is stepping down from his position as Chief Executive Officer of Football at Liverpool, with the English executive set to leave Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and Liverpool ahead of the club’s pre-season preparations. Edwards had been appointed CEO of Football upon his return to FSG in February 2024. Previously, he had run the club’s football operations as Sporting Director from 2016 to 2022, guiding the transfer strategy that yielded major signings such as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. After rejoining FSG, Edwards was entrusted with a broader remit to lead the organisation’s football strategy, a mandate that included exploring multi-club ownership expansions. FSG reportedly conducted research into around 25 clubs but ultimately scrapped plans to acquire another team.
“It has been a privilege to return to Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool Football Club at such an important moment,” Edwards said. “I leave believing Liverpool is in a strong position, with outstanding people, a clear direction and the foundations in place for continued success.”
In related remarks, Klopp revealed how Liverpool had considered signing Kylian Mbappé, even noting that discussions had occurred while traveling on a plane. FSG President Mike Gordon commented on Edwards’s impact, saying: “Michael has made an extraordinary contribution to Liverpool Football Club and Fenway Sports Group throughout his time with our organization. When Michael returned in 2024, he did so at a pivotal moment for Liverpool, embracing a broader leadership role across our football interests in the process.”
Gordon added that Edwards’s return coincided with Liverpool navigating a significant period of transition, culminating in the club’s historic 20th English league title, an achievement to which Michael contributed meaningfully. He concluded by thanking Edwards for his outstanding service, friendship, and leadership, and wished him and his family every future success and happiness on behalf of John Henry, Tom Werner, and everyone at Fenway Sports Group.
