Report – Brazilian Star Set to Stay at Atalanta After Failed Man Utd Transfer

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

Ederson, the Atalanta midfielder, was on the brink of a move to Manchester United earlier this summer, but the deal collapsed at the final hour. Gazzetta dello Sport now reports that the Brazilian star is close to signing a fresh contract with Atalanta, tying him to the New Balance Arena for the foreseeable future. The anticipated transfer to Old Trafford appeared to be a done deal at one point, with Atalanta and Manchester United agreeing on a €45 million fee. Ederson even completed medicals while on World Cup duty with Brazil after Carlo Ancelotti extended a surprise call-up in the wake of Wesley Fofana’s injury. However, United ultimately pulled the plug, and Ederson is instead poised to remain in Bergamo as he prepares to ink a new deal. His current contract runs through 2027, and Atalanta is eager to ward off interest from Europe’s elite clubs by locking him down.
Atalanta, for their part, were not eager to let Ederson go to Manchester United. The club had previously rebuffed repeated approaches from Inter Milan last summer, signaling that Ederson is a central figure in their long-term plans. After a somewhat injury-interrupted start to the season, the 27-year-old regained form and emerged as one of head coach Raffaele Palladino’s standout performers. He made 30 appearances in Serie A and added nine more in the Champions League, underscoring his value to the squad.
The arrival of Maurizio Sarri as head coach is not expected to undermine Ederson’s status at Atalanta. If anything, Sarri’s appointment could reinforce the case for extending his contract, as the club aims to avoid another protracted transfer saga in future windows. For now, Ederson’s future remains uncertain, but Sarri will be keen to present the prospect of a leading role under the new regime as a decisive factor in persuading him to commit long-term to Atalanta.
The potential renewal would align with Atalanta’s broader strategy of maintaining a core of seasoned performers who can help the club contend at the top of Serie A and maintain competitive standing in European competition. Ederson’s blend of technical quality, versatility, and experience makes him a valuable asset as the team builds toward continued success under Sarri. As talks progress, both the player and the club will be weighing the benefits of a multi-year extension against the lure of opportunities abroad, with Atalanta aiming to fend off any future overtures from Europe’s giants and preserve the continuity that has become central to their project. In the meantime, Ederson’s demonstrated form this season reinforces his case as a key pillar for Palladino’s attacking-minded system, where his ball-handling ability and midfield dynamism can help drive the club forward in domestic and continental campaigns.
