Jeremy Monga says he is delighted to be joining what he calls the best club in England over the past decade after Manchester City beat Arsenal to secure his signature. The winger, who celebrated his 17th birthday on Friday, attracted interest from Arsenal and Brentford this summer following Leicester City’s relegation from the Championship. Several Premier League clubs explored a move for the youngster, but Arsenal had appeared to be best positioned, having entered talks with the Foxes. In the end, Manchester City stepped in at the last moment and landed the player for £10 million plus add-ons, a fee that Arsenal were unwilling to meet. Monga, the third-youngest player to have appeared in the Premier League, has signed a five-year contract. He made 27 league appearances for Leicester last season, eight of which were starts, contributing a goal and two assists.
“When I learned that Manchester City were interested, I knew instantly this was the right choice for me,” Monga said. “For any young footballer, joining this extraordinary club is a dream come true. This has been the best club in England over the past 10 years. It has also shown that the pathway from the academy can lead to first-team opportunities, as demonstrated by players like Phil Foden and Nico O’Reilly. It is a privilege to be here, and I’m absolutely delighted to have joined.”
