‘Get Back to the Standard’ — Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell Issues Reality Check to J.J. McCarthy, Kyler Murray

Minnesota quarterback J.J. McCarthy finds himself in a fierce scramble to win the Vikings’ starting job for next season. With training camp approaching,Kyler Murray, the former Arizona Cardinals signal-caller signed to a one-year deal, has stepped in to challenge McCarthy for the quarterback duties in Minnesota. During an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show this week, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell laid out the challenge facing the contenders and explained why winning the job would matter for the team.
“Kyler has come in and done a great job. J.J. I think has benefited from it; he had a very solid spring,” O’Connell said. “Carson Wentz is a veteran presence in the room who, over the last four years, has dealt with seven or eight different quarterbacks. For the two years we had our starter play every game, we won 13 and 14 games. We want the quarterback position to be a driving force behind our success by doing their job and helping the great players around them to flourish. We have a great defense. If we can limit turnovers, generate some big plays, and get our run game going, I’m excited about where we are.”
Murray, a league veteran who was selected No. 1 overall by the Cardinals in the 2019 NFL Draft, has already made his mark in the league. He captured NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and led the Cardinals to their first playoff appearance in six seasons in 2021. After seven years in Arizona, Murray was released, but he has not backed down from pursuing a QB1 role in Minnesota. McCarthy, selected 10th overall in the 2024 draft, missed his entire rookie season with a torn meniscus. He did, however, take over as the Vikings’ starter last year after Sam Darnold joined the Seattle Seahawks, finishing 6-4 in his starts as Minnesota finished 9-8. In OTAs and minicamp this offseason, McCarthy and Murray took first-team reps together.
O’Connell avoided tipping his hand about which quarterback might hold the inside track, instead emphasizing how the competition could help raise the team. “I’m not really familiar with a closed competition,” he said. “I’ve heard that people are fascinated by that dynamic, but here’s what I’m certain of: our goal entering this offseason was to elevate the standard of the quarterback position. When we feel like multiple guys in the room are capable of meeting that standard, that’s when the Minnesota Vikings win football games.”
Looking back at last season, Murray’s numbers included 962 passing yards on a 68.3 percent completion rate, with six touchdowns and three interceptions, along with 173 rushing yards. The competition between Murray and McCarthy will shape Minnesota’s quarterback plans as they push toward the new season.
