Alejandro Garnacho did not join Chelsea for their pre-season activities as the Premier League club continues to pursue a permanent sale of the winger. Chelsea kicked off pre-season training on Thursday for first-team players not involved in the World Cup, but Garnacho was not present at the Cobham sessions. This absence underscores the uncertain future facing the 21-year-old at Stamford Bridge after a disappointing 12 months since his £40 million move from Manchester United on a seven-year contract. Chelsea value Garnacho at around £43 million (about €50 million) and will consider only permanent offers, despite reports of loan interest from Serie A side Roma. Interest from the Premier League, other European clubs, and teams in Saudi Arabia has also been reported, with discussions underway and progressing with several potential suitors. Manchester United would be entitled to ten percent of any sale proceeds.
During the previous season, Garnacho managed just one Premier League goal in 24 appearances, with ten of those appearances coming as a substitute, as he failed to secure a regular starting spot under both Enzo Maresca and later Liam Rosenior. Any exit would be part of Chelsea’s broader strategy to reshape the squad under new manager Xabi Alonso this summer. The club has already completed several signings, including full-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £47 million and winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting for £40 million. In addition, Chelsea has offloaded two notable players: left-back Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for £52 million and winger Tyrique George to Everton in a deal that could rise to £24 million.
Chelsea are actively pursuing further moves, particularly in the defensive department, with Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix among their targets, and discussions ongoing with Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria about a potential move to west London. At the same time, there is an expected stream of departures, as Trevoh Chalobah’s representatives explore options with Italian clubs Inter Milan and Como. Chelsea ended last season in 10th place in the Premier League and are set to embark on a pre-season tour that will take them to Australia and Asia over the next two weeks, as part of their preparations for the new campaign.
