It’s Draft Day. For most sports, it’s a festive occasion when you get to celebrate the moment your players take a leap to the next level, hearing their names called as they join the professional ranks. But for college baseball fans, Draft Day can feel more like a PTSD-inducing marathon of patience, where your mood swings with every name announced or, more often, with the anticipation that you won’t hear too many names you recognize. Zero names would be ideal, of course, but when you’re chasing recruits at Vanderbilt’s level, that’s rarely, if ever, a realistic expectation—though it has happened once or twice.
Here are the names we’d rather not hear. In short, it would be great to forget the names of outfielder Eric Booth Jr. (who’s projected to land in the top 10 of the first round) and shortstop Aiden Ruiz (a smooth-fielding standout likely to be picked within the first 50 selections). It would also sting to lose one or more of our top pitching prospects, left-hander Sean Duncan and right-hander Joseph Contreras, though there’s still a slim chance one of them makes it to campus. And at least one of our two premier shortstop commits, James Tronstein or Luke Williams, could be headed elsewhere. If we can limit the losses to four or five of these players, while keeping the core of the nation’s top-ranked signing class intact, we’ll be well positioned to return to the postseason, contend for a top seed this year, and push for a national title within the next two to three years. If the damage is more severe, well, you might recall the moment when Krusty drank gasoline and woke up on Bart’s lawn.
Then there are our own players who aren’t currently in the draft spotlight. Most of Diamond Dores aren’t expected to be selected, and today’s rounds 1 through 4 probably won’t feature many of them, save for perhaps Braden Holcomb who might hear his name called. Still, the day isn’t over, and the possibility of a late-round surprise always lingers.
Join us in the comments as we collectively brace for the toughest, most nerve-wracking weekend of the year for college baseball fans. We’ll be here at Anchor of Gold, riding the tension together. Pour Jobu his rum, raise a Hail Pinman, and shout “OO!” with Vocockyteps as we mark Draft Day. It’s an event that demands resilience, debate, and a shared passion for our Diamond Dores. Let the chatter begin and the countdown to the next generation of Vanderbilt stars commence.
